SRV Cargo Scoop Behaviour Improvements

The SRV cargo scoop, when deployed, has no adverse affect on the SRV unlike how deploying it on a ship makes it turn slower. Why does it need to be toggled at all? Why can't it just be ready to scoop all the time. Would free up an extra button.

Engineering materials take up no cargo space, and there are practically no reasons you would ever not want to pick them up. Why do we have to individually target a material before collecting? Could engineering mats just pick up when driving over them without targeting? When you shoot a rock cluster and get 3-4 drops landing next to each other and have to manually target each one, reverse and forward multiple times. This could just be a single forward motion and gather all of them. If you really want to, you should be able to target and ignore certain mats, like you can with limpets.

Since other goods take up cargo space, it makes a bit more sense that you would want to specifically target these items to pick them up.

It's leftover code from when you had a tiny limit of what could be collected and I think they just forgot about it when they upped all the limits, tho it's been suggested before and nothing's been done about. Fdev must consider this (unlike boarding your ship) actual gameplay <shrug>.

Because the cargo scoop will hoover up containers if you aren't careful, and if you don't realise they are there they go into your ship cargo and make you a magnet for pirates and bad guys. So you only should lower your cargo scoop when you are intending to pick stuff up.

I had mentioned that cargo should stay as it is, requiring targeting in order to pick up.

No this is what I mean, I often target containers to see what's in them, if I don't want any of it I often just drive straight through, if the cargo scoop is always down then there's a good chance it will hoover up the last thing I targeted even if I pass just to one side, which I don't want. At the moment it's single button toggle if you want, just press it when you launch the SRV if you want it open all the time.

So untarget them if you don't want to pick them up?
If the SRV just remembered that the scoop is set to open between deploys that would work too.
Or just have engineering materials pick up automatically regardless if the scoop is up or down, that's the main thing I'm suggesting I guess. They take up no space and pirates don't interdict you for having them.

I am not sure that the SRV uses enough buttons to make the change necessary, in my bindings it is the same button that lowers the scoop on my ship so it isn’t as if it conflicts.

I feel is the main point from the original post (correct me if I'm wrong OP), that when you shoot the rock into five pieces you then have to individually target each segment - not whether the scoop is up or uses an extra key or you accidentally hoover up a giant canister of platinum.

Yeah, the actual behaviour that could be improved is material gathering.

My thoughts around the cargo scoop open/close state and how they don't affect locomotion, unlike the ships is what lead me to question why.

Varonica does make a fair point about accidentally picking up cargo. I'll concede on that one.

But yeah, just auto scoop up mats, they weigh nothing, there's no downside to picking them up, and going back and forth across a pile of them manually targeting is a bit tedious

A cargo hatch shouldn't affect locomotion anyway, esp. not the way it does on the ship...

When I'm collecting stuff, I'll just drive around with the cargo hatch open. You only pick up what you target anyway, it's very difficult to accidently pick up cargo (unless you aren't paying much attention :) ). No reason to get rid of the hatch, though.
