Horizons srv cargo?

[sour] Had a problem with scooping cargo mats earlier. I thought I had it fixed with the info I got here.

I just did a data scan in Zoqui Xuang. (Lucky I'm friendly with the factions because I got scanned on surface)

I thought a surface scanner would do the job. No go. Bought the buggy. Back to the planet. Did the scan, got the data.
On the way back to the ship, saw some scanner information. To cut a long story short, I scooped up 4 different mats from one rock.
Went back to the ship. parked under it. Brought up cargo Transfer.
WTH? The cargo bay in the SRV was empty and the Ships bay had mats in it. The action buttons were waiting for confirmation. Both inactive.
Checked the cargo in the ship but no help as I think I already had some of those mats.

Now for crucial information ....... please! Did the mats transfer to the ship hold or did they go awol?[where is it]

Are you confusing materials and cargo?

Materials you scoop up from shooting a rock will live in your Magic Backpack (stay with you when you die, and do not take up cargo space, using your 1000-capacity material storage) - as these are in your magic backpack, they can't be transferred to/from your mothership
Cargo/Commodities will be 1t containers, so you can only grab two at a time on an srv (until they invent new SRVs for us) - these take up cargo space, and can be transferred to and from your mothership

Yes. Materials. So when I scoop materials, and they go into magic backpack, does that mean I could scoop mats all day? (Got 995 ATMO)
Yeah. 995 so have to get rid of some.
But Can I scoop all day without returning to the ship? (As long as the ship has room?)

For materials, you can scoop all day as long as you have <1000 materials in your inventory - discard those that you don't need or are less valuable in order to free up some space
Cargo, your SRV can only carry two at a time, so if you want to keep scooping you need to transfer the cargo to your mother ship in order to free up SRV space so you can scoop up more

One thing to be aware of when collecting cargo in the SRV; if your ship's cargo holds is full, you cannot board the ship if you have cargo in the SRV - no message explaining why. Solution is to jettison the cargo from the SRV

Personally, I keep track of which mods I put on my ships and the materials required for each mod. Usually only keep 20 of the hard to find mats and the most useful I.e. srv repair and refuel, and around 10 of whatever the mods require, and no more then 5 of everything else. That way I never get over 1000. The same with data. That way I have around 10 rolls for a mod if I need it.
