SRV exploding when out of fuel...

Your ship does too if I recall correctly? Been a while since I ran out of space go go juice.
It's a safety feature. The explosion kills the driver so they don't have to suffer asphyxiation.
However, my suit has oxygen ...?!!
Good point ... though I'd prefer to be able to *self-destruct ... rather than being auto-destructed ...
Ah, I see ... they installed a 'supported death' module instead ...Precisely this.

There should be an "Out of Fuel" warning and a count down, firing the ejection system, which throws your escape pod clear of the vehicle.
That's why we find escape pods on the ground and in space.
As it is now, we go dark, then respawn in our ship or the last visited station.
No immersion at all.

The SRV was before suits and they didn't retcon it...However, my suit has oxygen ...?!!

Yeah, I remember getting the Horizons expansion and being all excited ...
Am I playing a different game or something? Because I've run out of fuel a few times and never had it explode - most recently was today so no case of bad brains. Fuel runs out, emergency timer pops up, synth fuel or limp back to ship, done.

Same here, I've ran out multiple times. Quick fuel synthesis and rolling again!
The OPs confusion is about why you explode once life support timer reaches zero.
Escape pod goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrttt.
Ah so the Death Star exploding was the emergency evacuation device.
When the SRV runs out of fuel this happens:
When the oxygen countdown reaches zero:
Out of Fuel. Oxygen Depleted Countdown
Exited SRV No Problem. Countdown Paused While Outside SRV
Re-Entered SRV. Countdown Continues. Kaboom.
Spawned in Ship Orbiting Planet.
- You can still drive but you lose functions like shields.
- You get an oxygen depletion warning with a 4 min count down. Even when wearing a space suit.
- You can synthesize fuel to make the SRV happy again.
- If you exit the SRV the countdown pauses. If you re-enter the SRV the countdown continues.
When the oxygen countdown reaches zero:
- The SRV explodes.
- You are sent to a rebuy/incident report screen. You press redeploy.
- You are placed in your ship. Your ship is no longer on planet surface. You are in orbit.
