SRV: Extremely long landing gear for small ships? Just... weird.

The picture says it all really. Looks like a very awkward and non aesthetic at all way of making the SRV fit below small ships when deployed. See here for the regular landing gear.

:p

Why not have the ship stay hovering at a few meters above landing ground level in autopilot while the SRV is dropped below it? Once dropped the ship AI just lands it right away as per normal.

Annoying to get back into, I guess. Though it would be pretty cool to remotely activate the ship and see it take off into hover height so you can re-dock with it. :)

Maybe there will be some kind of under-carriage raising mechanism, whereby if you are deploying an SRV, the landing gear raises up to allow access underneath?
Be nice if it returned to its normal height after deployment though, it does look kinda awkward. More like a flamingo than an eagle.

In the End, it needs to work, astethics is lower priority. Dunno if the hovering ship would be such a practical Idea, even more so for entering the Ship again. I sure wouldn't design a ship like that, making the landing gear longer so you can enter/exit while the ship is standing still seems to be the better Idea. Or make the SRV go out of the Butt.

Exactly what I was thinking. Thank you very much!

They could even do so much more with this in the future, for example allowing the ship to hover at a player chosen altitude, and have the SRV "combat drop" from that altitude for maximum fun and adrenaline!

Exactly. SRV thrusters say so! 5 by 5 :p Although probably not as "high" as that Aliens dropship though!

I think they also said it is the reason why you have to land on flat ground. To provide clearance for SRV deployments. So flat, retractable turret and long legs. Sounds sensible.

Are we sure that's not just the Eagle? I don't remember the Cobra's landing gear being that high in the livestream.

Alternatively the legs could be hydraulic and extend a few feet when the srv is being deployed, then lower back down to the level shown in your link once the srv clears the underbelly. Those long legs on small ships do look a bit silly.

Edit:
What T-Dog said :)

It's likely only the very small ships.

Eagles, Haulers, Sidewinders etc.

Anything that sits very low to the ground on a pad right now (and hopefully will stay that low there).

Acceptable. There are no shortage of priorities I think the people here would like to see addressed before worrying about the aesthetic pleasure coming from looking at the landing gear on an iEagle.

With respect.
