SRV in VR - left and right menus pop up FAR TOO often. Solutions here

I've been using the DK to for about a year now and thoroughly enjoy it. For those of you that know by now after playing Horizons, while you are in the SRV because of its tight quarters the left and right menus pop up all too often when looking around.

What are some of you expert VR set up guys using as a solution to this problem? I remember reading somewhere that someone turned off the ability for the menus to pop up when you look left or right and instead used a portion of his X 52 joystick set up to bring up the left and right menus. How would I turn off the menus from my looking at them and require a button or two in my x52?

Any help here or other solutions fellas?

There are control options for this in Options/Controls allowing you to assign a key press to it as well as or instead of the head look.

I've done it with the stupid crotch panel for SRV deployment (which I personally hate). The left and right panels are a bit on the close side I find but their popup doesn't personally bother me (I'd just turn the SRV if I really wanted to look at anything or use the turret cam).

Call me silly, but I just cannot find which options/controls allow you to assign key press instead of the headlook.

Can you please tell me exactly where they are?

Thanks,

Can't remember off hand, but it's here. It basically sets it so menus don't pop up on headlook, and you have to use whatever buttons you've set to the menus for them to pop up.

I appreciate that they put the option in "focus on panel/do nothing" but what they REALLY REALLY REALLY need... is an option to toggle "Focus look on" and "Focus look off" so you can just turn the... focusing on and off. It is really hard to deal with in the buggy.

My only fix right now is just leave the crotch screen on while driving.

There is one, I can rotate one of my x55's rotaries away from the middle position to disable all the UI panels, then return it to the 0 position to use them again. I also have the crotch menu set to a button press, one press it shows, another it goes.

Do you remember what this control setting is called? I went through the list two times already and couldn't find it.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. just devils advocate here... what key bind are you talking about? Is this a headlook option overide?

edit: well damn i never knew they're was a directinal mode... hmmm still doesnt have a toggle. maybe I can lua something up

I believe the function is 'UI Focus'.

Maybe try Joy2Key? Set a key to 'UI Focus' in E: D and then use that app so a button on your HOTAS presses that key and keeps it pressed. Be sure to set "toggle between on and off" in the assignment options. A quick AutoHotKey script could be thrown together to do the same. You could maybe even do the reverse using a script and have the key pressed at all times, then have your button press release it - in effect having the UI off at all times and having to press and hold a button to show it....

I guess the rotary I use is like keeping a button pressed once it's moved from the zero position.

There are 3 items in the options that control the panels pop-ups. I can't quite remember their names but they are toward the bottom the the options. I just selected those off (meaning that the panels ignore look).

I do use Voice attack and bind keys 1-3 to each panel so all I have to do to pop on up is to call it (toggle). E.g "Right Panel" or "Status panel" or whatever for the panel on the right, and calling it again turn it off.

Works like a charm, and no keyboard hunt required.

Anyway it's a solution.

Yeah i think that's what it's doing.

A toggle UI Focus option like FA off/on would still be the most beneficial. However, I think I'll be able to cook something up. Thanks for pointing this out.

Have you cooked something out? I'd like to solve this annoyance already. The panels change my controls during flying/driving if I unwillingly open them up by looking to the side.

Wow, nice thread necromancy skills! *It Lives!* Ahem... :D

I turn the auto-popup feature off, and just use a joystick hat to turn the panel on/off when I need it. I can look out of my ship/Fighter/SRV whenever I like, have the panel up constantly even when I look away, or get rid of it whenever.

I can pop the panel up, change tab, ask for docking permission all without looking (and far, far faster than Voice Attack, I'm talking less than a second).

Auto popup is a funky feature, and I liked it at first, but its not efficient if you have to keep looking at the panel to maintain it. Sometimes you do need to look away. Or as above when docking, not look at it at all.

I know that it is possible to set it to "do nothing" and activate each panel by the keys 1-4 or by scrolling through all of them with the UI Focus key. But it would be better if you could still open them by just looking at them, but deactivate the whole feature if not needed and toggle it back on if needed. With a single key. People asked for this before, including myself, shouldn't be too hard really.

I tried to do an autohotkey script that holds the UI Focus button automatically (which turns auto pop-up off) and releases the button if you press the actual button. In short, turning it to a toggle key. Had no luck yet. If someone knows how to achieve this, that would help.

OK, I see. I don't think that it is possible with the current combinations. There's just the UI Focus, which switches between the different windows.

I made a small logic in the voice attack that will toggle the UI FOCUS key press just by saying screens ON or Screens OFF.
I don't use it much, but it's there.

Problem is, that the number of people asking for this is low and threads that suggest/request this don't get any replies. Such a small simple thing and it will never get addressed, because of low exposure. I don't even feel any motivation to play ED, because of this trivial flaw that completely ruins the free look experience.

You actually can toggle the look feature on and off. I have it mapped to my HOTAS
