So I'm reading the 5th book in The Expanse series (seriously awesome show and book), and in the prologue there's a scene where they use laser designators to mark targets. A ship that was doing a hard burn of 10-15 Gs deployed a few dozen lengths of tungsten which were guided by simple rockets toward the target.
The scene it describes is so cool. The Martian marines in their powered armor are there, and then gone as well as most of the complex as the tungsten rounds strike the moons surface obliterating the area. (Despite the fact that the tungsten rounds were moving really fast, it still took them 18 days to reach the target).
How about having a mechanic with multi-crew that allows SRVs the ability to laser designate a target, which a multi-crewed ship could strike from orbital cruise? Obviously Elite's technology is far greater than The Expanse so it wouldn't take 18 days, but my thought is that it would have to be a multi-crewed ship as one CMDR has to pilot and the other has to deploy the rounds, with the SRV on the ground holding steady. The guy on the surface would have front row tickets to one hell of a fireworks show.
Just a thought. Back to reading!
