SRV mileage link to Exploration status?

I remember FD talking about SRV mileage being linked to your Exploration status, and the further from civilization you were, the greater the benefit, but I'm fuzzy on the details.

Does anyone know how it works?

Is it capped after a certain point?

Is there a maximum distance/diminishing returns effect?

Do you see the benefit immediately, unlike Astronomical data?

Any other info?
