Newcomer / Intro SRV turret control

While fiddling in beta, it's become apparent my SRV turrret controls need looking into. Decided to have a game of slapsies with a skimmer and got my behind whipped as my joystick just kept over-compensating for every movement. I tried altering the deadzones and switched to mouse control - which made left me unable to yaw left and right. Weird :S

What did you find the best set up here?

Cheers.

My SRV driving setup is:
Forward/backward - throttle (full range setting with the "0" in the middle)
Steering - Joy roll axis
Air roll - also roll axis
Air pitch - Joy pitch axis

Turret pitch - joy pitch axis
Turret rotation - joy yaw (twist) axis.

It's a really simple setup. It means I can't jump around in turret view, but who would, really.

Guess I'll have to figure out how to drive Hodo once I screw with the bindings some. I can see this taking a bit of time to get it right. If you see a bunch of scarabs out running about on a planet mine will most likely be the one with a turn signal light on.. all the time.

SRVs are fun. They can be frustrating at first but the main reason they are fun is exactly that fact that they can be so crazy and unwieldy. :D

I mean, they are on par with things like Baja specials. Something that can go 100 miles per hour over the rough terrain won't be easy to drive, right?

... apropos the original post:

My HOTAS stick POV (8-way HAT) is by default the turret movement control but I find it imprecise so I use the analogue mini-stick on my throttle (as well - the alternate binding), binding the axes to rotate and tilt - much more controllable. (It also makes the position control be effected by a different hand to both the fire button{s} and the buggy steering, which is via the stick.)

On my throttle I have what I guess is a secondary yaw control. It's a left and right paddle looking thing. I don't have it bound to anything right now so I'll try and bind that for the steering so I can control the speed and direction from one device. Weapons on the other with side the yaw and pitch control for turret. Should work. When I get back to my home port I'll start working on it.

Ah, now there's an option.

I was hoping to have to get a mouse control that moves the sights as the mouse is moved (a la "Operation Wolf") but I s'ppose I'm SOL there.

I suppose you could do that - I have never tried it - maybe that is what the KB+M aficionados do?

EDIT: See image in Conde's post below (#15), shows the mouse turret axis control settings. [up]

I do this.
I also turned down the sensitivity for the turret.

Ahh they were an awesome bunch! Hard to believe it's half a century old. Rep for that pic! The only reason I bought Horizons was so I could drive around like them- (anyone under 45 look away now) Tra-La-La One Bananna Two Bannana....

Here's my control set up. I found the Joystick yaw suited me best for steering as opposed to roll, probably due to the yaw for ships behaving in a similar fashion to ground steering.
Having the turret controlled by Mouse and Joystick comes in handy sometimes.

I have two sets of binds for the SRV turret.

Most frequently, I use the mouse because it's the most precise and fastest.

However, I also have the mini stick on my throttle bound to the turret (as the SRV only has one thrust vector) which allows me to use the turret passably well (with good sensitivity curves) while still retaining full control of the SRV, even in the air.

Not sure if it helps but it is nice in KBrd and mouse land...mouse for the turret, kbrd for the SRV. Works very well as long as you remember where the turret is pointing relative to the SRV. If you start doing Guardian stuff you will need to sort this out, it makes life much easier. Before that I rarely used the turret, occasionally for taking down skimmers but that was not essential and I stopped bothering when I sometimes got a bounty for them. The payout was not worth the risk.
