Yeah I'm watching the series again.
It's a horribly dated, and awful program, yet great at the same time.

For the 1st time ever, I've noticed something that's bothering me.
I'm in season 2, and 99% of the time they've visit a "starbase", it's a city on a planet, not a base in orbit.
What gives?

It was all model based; they had one or two starbases that, if you watch the behind-the-scenes stuff, would still be a royal pain to film. So they went with matte paintings and, as already stated, a transporter. Cheap. Plus, really, we're more likely as it stands to stick stuff on rocks than have it floating in space methinks.

NG didn't stand the test of time very well... Also IMO is the one with the least interesting set of characters. My favorite is Deep Space 9.

I watched S1 when it was on TV, I couldn't stomach it afterwards. Seemed like it turned into a soap-opera without enough sci-fi for my taste.
Maybe the later seasons got better, but I had given up.

TNG is my fav TV show. Picard is the De'Man. Enterprise D is where i want to go when i die.

Season 1 and 2 are not the best, Some good episodes though in Season 2 (measure of a man for example). Season 3 up's the shows game a lot IMHO... Season 7 isnt so great a lot of B quality scripts.

As for Star Base...

A starbase or starship base was a permanent support facility operated by Starfleet, consisting of space stations, drydocks, and/or ground installations.

The same can be said for TNG, DS9, Voyager... Enterprise to a point (that really found its legs in the last season). Discovery is fine from the word "go"; but things have changed a lot in TV!

TNG is great from Season 3 onwards; DS9 takes a bit longer; S4 onwards is some of the best Trek on screen. Voyager... is okay but I think it has great episodes throughout and never has a strong season (like the Year of hell... fantastic).

Once you've seen them all, it's far easier to enjoy them the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time through.....

Discovery is awful. There are no words to describe how much i dislike that show.

It's your opinion, and I really really do understand the general dislike, but I guess, it's that or nothing and I quite like having something Trek related to watch. I just don't think a revisit of the '90s stuff would hold water these days; to the masses. Though saying that, I really like what the Orville is doing (more love letter to TNG than anything else).

Let us see how Picard Does when its released. (although im not holding my breath)

I happen to like all of the ST franchise (minus the animated series - not watched them).

ST:TNG is awesome - for me it continued the sage from ST:TOS. Piccard is the Man. Granted, not all episodes were top notch writing, but they held my interest from 1st showing to today. ( "Remember me" I rather enjoyed - S04E05)

I still like TNG. Some of it hasn't aged well, but the important parts have. Show was never really about visuals and the aribtrary pseudoscience explained through treknobable was silly from day one. It's the characters that make the show.

I used to enjoy the series "Babylon 5". One thing I noticed was that Babylon 5 had an underlying plot line all the way down the line, whereas the various Star Trek series didn't until Deep Space 9.

Each episode of TNG could generally stand on it's own, but there were multiple overarching plots that were carried through the whole run.

Damn thing won't let me quote this morning... but regarding Picard. This is Patrick Stewart - and from a personal point of view (I met the man, he's awesome), I'd watch him sipping tea whilst he watches a fire burn in his lounge. So, I'm so biased, I won't be able to hate on it even if it's awful. Sorry :p

Hardcore TOS fan here.
Born on Sept 8th to boot.

No Captain can ... hold... a candle... to.... Kirk!
(Patrick Stewart is however, legendary, even though he does not dropkick.)
