Standard Beta Review (for potential new commanders)

So I finally got to play the beta today (for 5 hours I must say :D) and here's what I have to say about ED. If you are thinking if you should purchase ED on it's current state or just wait till full release keep on reading, you might find the answer.

First this is a flight sim. Not a "dog fighting, action packed, like a star wars movie" kind of game. This is a slow paced sim that encourages exploration, sure there's combat (some zones have lots of it too). The combat is not like your star wars games were you shoot and kill, shoot and kill. It's actually something that you have to think about, there's the energy to shields/weapons/engines to be considered and your ship doesn't move like your regular shooter. So if you just want a game where you can easily shoot enemies this is not for you (you might get your butt kicked by some of the real elite here which are none to mess with)

If you want a game that actually simulates space travel, what it will be like to trade in those scenarios and fend yourself from pirates (or become one) then this is the game for you, but bare in mind, everything is done in a more slow paced manner, as this is a simulator and distances here are long.

As for the current state of the game, this is a very well polished beta, I played betas before (BF4 comes to mind) and compare to that one this is a really clean software, I had a couple of crashes but not more than I've gotten on full released games. It offers a lot to do, missions on each station, trading, dogfighting, or you can just mess with other players as this is a persistent online universe. I don't know if they expanded the content from alpha and premiun beta as I just got in today, but let me tell you for a beta, there's A LOT to do in this game. No storyline for your character and it seems there won't be in the future (correct me if I'm wrong)

So should you wait for the release? only if you haven't been waiting long for a space sim or don't care that much for it. If you love space sims and wanted the real deal why wait? this is not as good as it gets, THIS IS THE BEST!.

Also if you backed "the other game" and you are thinking about this one, why not? You backed the other game because you want a space sim right? Well here it is, you can play this awesome game while waiting for the other one to be developed at some point in time. I've backed both and I think they're 2 different things, and the fact that you're playing this one now is not cheating on the other one :D

Pretty fair review. In many ways Elite: Dangerous is exactly what you would expect - an old-school game magnificently brought up to date.

A more elegant game, for a more civilized age ;)

HI! Thanks for the review, I too am a SC backer, and I do not see me backing this game as cheating on the other AT ALL ( That would be silly to think in this manner ). SC is still in development and will be for some time. ( Its not even a game yet ,just a few bits and pieces )

I backed ED because I liked what I saw, the way it was presented and what I read, and the people on this board seem open and passionate about ED and is why I came aboard so willingly.

And so far I am happy I did so :)

A game for a more geriatric sensibility. :p

I kid. But there are a lot of slower moments in the game as noted.

Well I said it on the review because lots of people saying "star citizen is going to be bigger" "star citizen would have this or that better than elite". So what? is not ready now and ED is, that to me is like people saying "oh I don't know if I back ED maybe CR will be mad at me "

Both review and statement +1 :D

Just thought I add this.

1- For anyone who is looking to buy the beta and thinking "this is a Online universe, am I going to get my butt kicked all the time by high level players (like on every mmo)?

The answer is no. I had this doubt myself, but I've been playing for a while now and haven't encounter any real player hostiles, yes you ARE going to run into NPC pirates, but those are easy to outrun (even on my Hauler with full cargo).

2- The SC (now called Frame shift) idea might not appeal to everyone, it makes the game somewhat slower because of the transitions, but I think it adds to the realism. Planets inside a system are light years away so just cruising at regular speeds will certainly not get you there, this "frame shift" fits well for the realism of space travel (at least for me :D)
