Star Citizen clearly attacked Elite Dangerous, is this the new marketing ?

After Watching the Star Citizen Gamescom 2016 demo shown here:

It is clear that Chris Roberts made a concerted afford to highlight aspects of Star Citizen that were "Better" than Elite dangerous.

Firstly he started with the FPS aspects of walking around the ship and the bases, one could argue this wasn't a direct attack but if one takes the entire demo into perspective and listens to Chris Roberts carefully he makes various distinctions in both visuals and by pointing out and stating the differences indirectly.

He mentions atmosphere worlds, that are generated visually with no transitional layers.

He talks about seamless entry and takeoff and repeats this over and over.

Camera keeps showing capabilities not available in E.D. showing side profiles of the ship, hovering around the ship, zooming in and out of the ship in external view.

He shows rear view of the ship as it leaves the planet, talks about the seamless world that is alive and focused on content to simulate life and interaction with the player.

He shows and talks about the new landing system with traffic control, here they seemed to have almost copied Elite Dangerous with their moving pads, but they went a step further with pad clearance for traffic control.

Quantum drive mechanics were shown while in rear view showing a seamless transition between normal flight and quantum travel. In comparison, super cruise is clunky and clumsy instance loader.

I was left with the distinct impression that he and his team had been reading our forums and decided to include as much info to counter most of the complaints made by E.D. players.

It felt to me like a direct comparison between star citizen and Elite . Its just my opinion, but i was not impressed considering frontier developments bent over backwards in accommodating Chris Roberts in the past.

Am i being paranoid ?

Clearly Elite's flight engine is far superior, that much is evident in their demo, ship handling in ED is far more satisfying and feels realistic, ED's sounds are far more impressive as well, perhaps next time Frontier Developments can demo highlights of what makes ED special.... just a thought.

I say your paranoid. Of course they praise there stuff, what do you expect? Doesn't mean when they praise there game they diss another, not sure how you got that impression and why they should specifcly diss ED with that. Going for it you can interept lots of that also as dissing for NMS, or GTA, or god knows what.

Well, when you show off a product that you want to sell, you specifically highlight its strengths, and they did just that. Don't see anything wrong with it.

SC is looking great and that demo sure hyped me back for the game. It does look like they are getting somewhere after all. They both have strengths and weaknesses, and it's great that we will have more variation to choose from in space games!

All he's doing is selling his game. The fact that you make a direct comparison to everything you think is 'better' about SC than ED says more about the state of ED, I think.

SC is incredibly ambitious and if they deliver on even half of what they've promised, it'll be a fantastic game.

I don't see this as an attack.

SC will(?) be a competitor, so he's highlighting his "competitive advantages", which is pretty much normal in the marketing world. NMS did the same for what they thought were their "competitive advantages".

Of course, until SC actually materializes into a playable, purchable, released game, everything is just promises and vapourware. When its released, then we can see what's what in both games. Until then, like in democratic elections, promises and imagination tend to always win over palpable facts.

Did he show off the wealth of missions available?
Did he do any crafting?
Did he try and influence a system's faction?
Did he join a galactic super power?
Did he find any evidence of alien life?
Did he point out the 20-25 FPS he was getting through the whole presentation?

No.

I'm gonna be busy with it when that patch hits. What they showed is incredible.

So, seems some Devs are actually listing, it is just the wrong guys.

I am NOT part of the SC-Hypetrain and have yet not backed the game, but tbh.: it is just a matter of time until i will get into it. Currently i just have other priorities and dont want to spoil me the fun by dropping too earlie into it like i did with Elite. I have the feeling that if i would have waited, it would have spared me quiet a bit of frustration.

I hope FDev is listening too and is actually understanding what bothers us and acts. And quickly. Mid october doesnt sound too good for me as i CURRENTLY am on holiday from work and in mid october i will have my hands full with work.

motormouth is just talking, ED is a success because if not, he would not talk about it.

CIG received a ton of money, until now, very little has been build into the game. When ED get the spacelegs and the crowd mechanics from planet coaster it will kick into fifth gear! Activate FULL BURN....

Personally I think the fact I've been able to play Elite Dangerous for nine months already more than gives it the edge. If I ever find myself with a spare £500 to spend on imaginary ships which I may or may not be able to fly in a game one day though, Chris will definitely be my first port of call.
