Star System names

Hi,
I'm pretty new to the forum, I am an explorer at the moment, loving this game, just a curious question, in some sectors we have Wregoe ##-#.... Etc, and in the middle of the secctor is a system named HIP ######, I keep coming across HIP in many sectors, why? What does it mean? Whats it's significent? It just looks random.

We have a lot of systems but I don't understand the designation names that had been given i.e Wregoe WP-G D10-73, I cannot see a pattern in the naming sequence and the next system next to it are Wregoe XL- C21-18 and Wregoe XD-V B24-5 etc, the sequence seems random does not count down or up making grid exploring harder.

There are two sources of stars in the E:D galaxy: Those from real-life star catalogues, and those that are made up to fill up the galaxy.

Often what you are seeing is one real star (with e.g. a HIP or HR reference) amongst a sea of made-up ones. Or sometimes it's two different catalogues, with different names.
In some sectors it's fairly clear that the real ones are the brighter stars, usually the A or B types, because a survey may have been made of all stars above a certain magnitude to go into the catalogue.
