Star systems, planets, positions etc. how accurate are they?

I always enjoyed Elite (from the Commodore 64 tot de VR version now). The early years where more about 'WHOAAA Space game!!! what's the fastest way to obtain a militairy laser" but now i am enjoying the surroundings cruising the galaxy Winnabego style. And the more time i am spending the more i want to know about the universe i am flying through. I recently discovered what's 'up' and what's 'down' and begin to see the system in things.

Now i am playing the VR version I have seen a lot of claims about realism. So i did some (quick) searches on realism and realistic here on the forums to find out how accurate the star map of ED is.
But if i look up the ingame solar systems (e.g. Praea Euq IT-F b38-4 or Swoilz PE-O a88-1) in Google search and add NASA i do not get any direct hits that would let me think the solar systems are official named stars.
If i leave NASA out of the search the only hits i get are reffering to Elite Dangerous.

So, if i wanted to learn more about the solar systems i fly through and relate the sings i see in game to what i see when i look up to the night sky would that be possible or do the star systems in ED have fictional names.
And does this mean that the solar systems and the type of planets that are found there are fictional also?

There are some astronomers on here that will be able to answer question properly but my understanding is that it does resemble reality. You should post in the Explorers sub forum for better dialogue on the subject.

Some are accurate to what we know and others are made up and simulated to a set of rules to make up the galaxy.

There are only around 150,000 ish real life systems in the game. The rest of the 400 billion are procedurally generated based on what we know about the galaxy.

The ones that are real are either named for their common names - Sirius, Barnard's Star etc... Or they're named for their star catalogue entries - HD, LHS, HIP, Gliese, LP etc...

The systems that are named for a region as in your example, followed by a string of letters and numbers, are the procedurally generated ones.

Inside human inhabited space there are also plenty of named systems that are fictional names, like Sothis & Ceos, Shinrarta Dezhra etc...

As mentioned, it's a mix. There are a lot of fairly accurate systems, however.

The EDDB pages for many star systems contain links to their corresponding real star data in the SIMBAD Astronomical Database.

For example, Alpha Centauri links here.

From what I've seen, Frontier tends to be quite diligent about updating known systems when more data becomes available, but as always, your mileage may vary.

I'm curios of they are going to add more black holes to the core given recent discoveries.

Thanks to you all for your input and leads on where i can find more relevant info.
It's a shame (or didn't i find the option) that i can't find out more about 'blots' of color or star patterns is see from my cockpit. When i try to track the blots of color on the galaxy map i can't always find the blot i am looking for.

99.9999% of the galaxy in ED is made up. Stars are all made up, the solar systems of each star are fabricated as are the black hole postions I'd say but this is down to the fact that we don't have the data to hand either. Yes, ED misses out much of what we do know but it's not that important and it also uses an RNG PG - solar systems don't actually exist until you enter one and generate it.

So yes it mostly all made up but who cares since we don't know anyway.

Note:
Some of the named systems actually correspond to real stars, but have been given fictional names over the top of their star catalogue names.
You can still see (and search for) the HD and HIP catalogue names on the Galmap and System screen.
Gliese and HR catalogue (and probably some of the others) stars also still have the HD and HIP designations.

Wanted to make it a little clearer regarding HIP and HP searching -

If you enter 'HD 78045' or 'HIP 44382' into the Galmap search screen, you'll get taken to Alpha Volantis.
