Star Trek, Boldy going ....

According to the maths done on the XKCD "What if?" feature, if you were close enough to a supernova, even if you could dodge all other forms of lethal radiation you would be killed by neutrino exposure alone - which is a ridiculous concept given how billions of them pass through every square centimetre of your body's surface area every second without any effect:

But our ships have extra sturdy hulls and mega powerful shields to protect us against those pesky tiny particles travelling with ridiculous energies.

The thing to consider here is that although our shields and hull might protect us from micro meteorites etc. they can be brought down in a few seconds from a laser! Imagine what a blast from a supernova would do....

We are allowed to have three captains per account and i backed enough to let me choose to start as an explorer in the long range ship, i will attempt to reach the centre but i will probably only give it about an hour most days so it will take a long time, i'm not even sure its possible, without stopping at a station to repair and service the ship i think it will fail way before i am there.

Something like 6 months for you then I expect! :)

But you are right about the possible servicing of equipment. The further you travel out into the void, and the further you get from the core systems, you will see less and less of humanities presence. Eventually you will see nothing at all, other than the odd explorer like yourself. At that point, travelling any further out may be more of a problem than simple fuel supplies.

Perhaps this is a deliberate act by FD? Maybe they don't want us all gallivanting around the galaxy, with gay abandon! Instead, they get the player base to gradually push back the boundaries, allowing humanity to explore the stars gradually as new systems are opened up and colonised, getting the next few star systems within our reach at last!

That sounds like a lot of fun to me.

I also think the game will be designed to hold you in a little, at least at the start, i dare say there will be more benefit to thoroughly exploring a smaller part and selling that information than just going outwards in a straight line.

There still be will be interstellar chat and radio to entertain lone explorers:) But nothing, surely, can substitute a presence of a fellow human being in another space faring ship.

If you and a buddy team up to go exploring, and you are in some local team/group and you both jump to the same system...who gets credit for discovering a new one? Split second timing or dual credit?

In any case, with comms either being in or out of game, you can both explore separately and if one of you finds something interesting you can always go and travel their and meet them. But this may take a while...;)

When we have the entire galaxy to play with I doubt I will play around with Space Engine any more or any of those other simulators. Then again, the chances of me being ambushed by pirates in those programs are much slimmer! :)

"Star Trek boldly going...." or how to make your very own video games - albeit abstractly - with SpaceEngine in its boldly current form:

SpaceEngine: The Quest For Earth (who wants the Infinity game now?) :)

SpaceEngine: Beyond Ludicrous Speed (who wants limited 30 ly jump drives?) :)

and I made these mini-games all for the sheer fun of it ;)
