Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Wow, and it's coming this year! I'm blaming FDev for this wonderful surplus of space games.

Looks good, now all I need are three friends and VR.

The soundscape immediately put me 'in' Star Trek.

:)

Wish the graphics were of a higher fidelity especially the stuff on the view screen and it wasn't set in JJ Abrams universe with their ugly ship designs.

It does look like fun though.

That ruined it for me, too. 23rd century is simply outdated for me. :D

But the gameplay concept itself might also not work very well.

Those paid actors to promote the game look very hyped to me.

The idea is good, but let's see if it's just not another simple experience to sell VR.

Interesting to see if this breaks into the mainstream. Artemis/Quintet is where it's at with these already, but a proper trek themed game would be a hoot.

I do notice they're using Touch though - would be nice if it had a non-VR component also, so there'd be more chance of finding a crew, or so some of your non-VR'd up mates could play also. I have a group of friends who I play Artemis with, but I'm the only one with the Rift/Vive, and none of them want to go in that direction for now, so I'd end up playing on my own or with randoms :(

I'd also love it if there were actions which could *only* be performed from Engineering/Jefferies tube X, so you'd have to go do it within the ship and tap your communicator to speak to the team - that would be awesome.

i.e. "Get down to engineering and recalibrate the plasma injector neutron flow!!!! Stat!!!"

That's the main problem with this concept: TV shows don't transfer well into games. ST was set up as it is, because it works well with a an ensemble cast recurring on screen each week. The stuff which happens on those shows is primarily done to make the audience grasp "flying a spaceship" while in reality a bunch of actors justs plays with some painted cardboard (and nowadays just in front of greenscreen).

From a gameplay POV it doesn't make sense to include most of that, because there is no audience watching you flying a spaceship. And unless Ubisoft finds a way to make playing Ensign Redshirt fun (in game he is not an actor paid for showing up), "playing on your own" will mostly be what happens.

Doesn't look as deep or fun as Artemis and Space Nerds in Space sadly. I was underwhelmed by the presentation.

Plus, it doesn't even have DMX support planned.

What's DMX you ask?

So, the release day is today..

Anyone looking to buy this? Im very tempted, but idk if i want to play this alone as this clearly is at its best with few friends.

This will be extremely popular at conventions and game show floors but I don't think it will sell well at all.

Ok so quick review:

It's a fun game. Works ok for the most part, except for some crashes and some lobby issues (it sucks when all you get thrown into is a lobby with the leader being AFK and doing dishes in the background)

The gameplay is rather shallow, not sure how long it will be entertaining. It feels nice to be on a starship bridge, the ship feels weighty and some of the sound effects are nice and beefy (warp jump) while others are meh (phasers). Graphics are so-so, I'm not sure how reviewers claim this is the best looking VR game yet.
In terms of stations, this is basically what I hoped ED would have for the first iteration of multicrew: Simple energy and repair management with some little doodads thrown in. Basic electronic warfare functionality. Basic navigation target plotting. It works in its simplicity and as a result this is a game that's easy to pick up.

In singleplayer it's a lot less interesting than online. The crew dynamics really add a lot to any multicrew game. You can play solo but you really really should go online. Crossplay with PSVR means a significantly larger playerbase from the start. In fact in the games I played, about 70% of players connect using a PS4.

This is about as deep, or slightly less so, than Artemis. Comparisons to Pulsar are a lot less favorable though, with Pulsar offering so much more (moving around inside the ship, beaming to planets, stations and enemy ships, etc) with deeper mechanics (engine core ejection, different types of damage and ship fires, deeper electronic warfare with lots of different "programs" to affect enemy ships, deeper mission system, more replayability, and playable both on a screen and in VR)

Compared to dedicated bridge sims like Space Nerds In Space you'll find that there's only a fraction of functionality there. For a full price game I think this is not enough.

The JJ-Trek ship never felt home to me, the TOS bridge is well made and surprisingly functional, though the buttons on the control consoles are perhaps a bit *too* faithful to the original, making ship operation needlessly complicated. It's a real shame that there's no TNG bridge, which would've been the most interesting to me.

My verdict is wait for a sale. This is not worth full price right now. All those reviewers saying that this is the best social starship multiplayer experience simply lack the experience to be able to compare and contrast. It's a fun little game, but nothing groundbreaking. Hopefully it'll get deeper functionality in future updates.

5th place at the Steam Global top sellers list after 12 hours of release. You want to change your estimate? ;)

Not really, not when games regularly go 1st place on the first 12hrs of their sells. The fact it made 5th just shows that there a pretty low penetration of VR. I suspect it won't stay long in the top ten either.
