I thought the trailer looks promising.

I'm also amused by the people who got upset with the cast being "too diverse" and having all those women im prominent roles :D It makes you wonder exactly what such social conservatives thought they were watching before? "This show about a utopian, egalitarian future has way too much equality and progress!"
I myself have no problem with this diversity, just so long as it's not to obviously trying to pander. I think the latest series of 24 added a gay character the right way, one of the most likeable characters in the show as well, i'm sure star trek will get it right (allthough the Sulu thkng in beyond was not great, George Takkei himself was opposed to that).

I loved DS9. What better way to explore the "utopian future" than to actually put it under an existential threat. The way all that prosperity and freedom threatened to turn into a police state was great as well.
Agreed, DS-9 did the darkness pretty good, in fact "in the pale moonlight" was one of the best ST episodes ever in my opinion.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I don't understand the argument that I see from some quarters that this Trek is somehow falling prey to SJWs. For one I hate that term, as I think it belittles diversity in general. Secondly, being diverse and challenging social norms is baked into Trek's DNA. You can't exactly expect Trek to *not* have that. Recall the controversy in the original series over the interracial kiss between Uhura and Kirk for instance.

No, my beef with this Trek is with the writing. It's with what appears to be a focus on action schlock over good sci-fi storytelling. Trek was never supposed to be about the action. It was about the characters. About asking questions about the human experience. About the unknown. Discovery. Not Spock punching some poor dude in the face repeatedly. The entire second half of this new trailer was an action film - not sci-fi.

Agreed. the whole tone of the latest ST's became too superficial. Darker or lighter? Optimistic, or pessimistic? Does not really matter as far its kept realistic, and does not slides in the pinkish all sweet fantasies of a child territory, although I liked DS9 harsher more brutal "darker" tone. but what else you can wait for it? This is war, and DS9 all about war, and unlike the action movies they were successfully captured it's spirit. It's ain't no sunshine thrill spectacular explosions, and lallala!

Will we get a traditional ST structure like TOS, NG, DS9..ect. with each show being it's own story with a larger story arc in the background. Or are we going to get 'The Trekking Dead' or 'Game of Stars' where if your not in on it from the start your going to get confused and frustrated.

I'm also concerned it will end up like DS9 which ended up like more of a soap opera then a gritty space drama. You know...who's Worf banging this week.

Terrible. Trek is dead. It's been Abrams-ified, and I can't stand the Abrams reboot.
Yeah, I'm in the same camp. The most annoying part for me is that ST Discovery is supposed to be in the Prime timeline only a few years before Shatner's Kirk assumes command of the Enterprise. And yet the show looks like it just stepped off the set of the last Abrams-ified Trek film. Complete with those ridiculously bland looking Blockbusterised Klingons!

If they wanted to make a Trek series in the Abrams-verse then go do that. Don't tarnish the lovely original Star Trek timeline with some kind of confused Abrams-verse inspired mutant. Having seen what they've done I'm now more interested in The Orville - and I don't even like Seth McFarlane!

Even the unfortunate Tim Russ produced low budget Trek indie film feels more like Star Trek than Discovery does:

Must be some fellow trekkers on these forums, i have mixed feelings about the new series from what we know so far, but i'd like to get an idea of the views of more people, a frontier forum sample will do just fine for that.

Loved it, especially the old series, but hey I'm old, still looking forward to see what they can do with the series. I hope it will return to less pew pew and more mystery.

may i say something ?

for me (if we examine the trailer) there are some things that gives positive feelings and
some others that gives a bad feeling.

Despite what you can say at first sight,The klingons looks good.
I watched a review by some very passionate trekkies who showed some old (unused) sketches from Ralph McQuarrie who
designed a possible aspect of the klingons for the first 1978 startrek motion picture.. and it is exactly what we saw in the trailer.
So, their guess is that who re designed the klingons has take that original concept and used it to build a refreshed/oldest version
of that race.

but, for example, all those 'lensflares'... are definitely a sign of the bad influence that Abrams donated to the brand.
I really hope they used the only visual choices from Abrams and wrote all the rest by someone who knows what to do.

we will see...
my only real hope is to not regret the old series and even 'enterprise' (that for me was pretty awful).

I'm hoping they're going the new way of series these days. Meaning a continuous storyline with less meaningless episodes that doesn't lead to anything or doesn't involve the main storyline at all. Less space soap opera as someone mentioned earlier.

I'm good with continuous story, but i also loved the exploration and character episodes, there needs to be some of those along side either a main story or a story arc.

So you mean more like DS9 then? Nothing new about having an overarching story arc in a TV series or a Star Trek series.

I think he meant less filler episodes. Considering the format of TV series these days Discovery will follow the same format I would imagine. From a Star Trek point of view when DS9 came out they hadn't really done that before. Still my favourite show out of all of them by far.

Trailer looks ok .. a few things irk me .. One being the JJ look for Klingons and the other being that they seem to be completely ignoring canon technology wise. If this isn't supposed to be set in the JJ verse it should have some sort of retro feel to it.

Hopefully my fears won't be justified in the end
