General / Off-Topic star trek film whats going on?

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
What's going on is a continued deterioration of the brand due to the convoluted IP rights situation between Paramount and CBS. Frankly I don't hold out much hope for Trek anymore.

I'm not so naive to think that CBS and Paramount made Trek back in the day out of the goodness of heir hearts or anything - it's always ultimately been about making money. The difference was that before they were happy to let smart people like Roddenberry and his proteges just make good stories and cash in on the success. Nowadays corporate has their hands so far up Trek's backside that the tail is wagging the dog. When the network suits and lawyers are making the show.... well, we get the Kelvin timeline and Discovery.

Nailed it.

/thread (part 2)

It might also be those story AI things that i hear are a thing in hollywood these days. Sort of asking a metracritic bot mixed with google translate and predictive text to green light parts of submitted story lines?

Sci Fi in general is a continued deterioration until the new gritty netflix series Judge Dredd: Mega City One comes out which casts Karl Urban once again. Last decent sci fi movie I seen was Dredd and yes i'd watch it over for the 7th time than see Rogue one for a second.

Agreed, Star Trek made by (legal) committee.

Flimley

The New Trek Movies are pretty good movies, but are horrible Star Trek Movies.

I swear everything Jar Jar Abrams touches turns into biowaste.

I'll put it differently.
J.J.A. makes interesting and fun to watch films.

But he should never be allowed to direct a film in an existing franchise. He will simply turn it into his own film and the franchise disintegrates.

They wanted Hemswort (Thor) and Pine (Kirk) to take a paycut as the films budget was reduced (as the last film under performed) and they said "Get Bent".

On top of this ,creative differences between directors and problems among the cast themselfs and - Hey Presto a show.

Man....star wars and star trek down, what classic sci-fi series is next on the chopping block? I'm sure the can do a few more series reboots with a switch to a all female cast. Because that has been doing well lately.......

I think Star Wars is in less trouble than Star Trek personally (mostly because I'm with the whole Grey Jedi thing). If Disney can get that thought on track I think people will be back.

Anyway, I know the article is about contract negotiations but Trek is such a ship's bridge ensemble piece that as soon as Anton Yelchin died - huge tragedy - the whole casting (arguably iffy to begin with) went right up in the air, I think.

Trek characters peaked with Lt Cmdr Data for me so maybe these franchises are meant to be products of their time and not destined to last forever after all. Unless you're a stoney faced lawman that is ....

The problem with Star Wars is that the new trilogy sucks. They waited toooooooo long to use the original cast members and made it into a soft reboot instead by pretty much retelling the original trilogy. Plus it didnt help that they had close to 30 years of extended universe that people read and then hand waived it away to extinction. Only now they realized it was a mistake and are incorporating EU stuff into the standalone movies and cartoons. (Rebels was excellent by the way).

I have more faith in the standalone movies then I do any Skywalker trilogies. They need to let the Skywalker legacy die and move on.

The problem with Star trek is that their no one with any vision leading it and all the studios who own seem to demand is more action please, can we had some pop music into a scene and how about some product placement, can you go darker please. An they all seem to be hook on using old TOS characters, now that seem to have start to dry up, and with due respect to Patrick Stewart they have move onto stng characters, no one is moving the franchise forwards with new characters, new technologies and new ideas.

There are others???

There stargate but MGM seem to be willing to let that rot.

Alien which Fox haven't got a clue what to do with and Disney won't do anything with it because it not kids friendly.

Predator which is the same as the above really but that got a new film coming out this year, which I expect will be the last film of the franchise as again Predator doesn't fit with disney family friendly image.

But outside of Predator, Star trek, star wars and alien there is no large scale sci fi franchise and four of them are own by companies who don't have a clue what to do with them.

At this point, they need someone else in charge of the Star Trek movies who understands it. JJ Abrams pulled the one-time nostalgia trick with ST: 2009 , but then didn't have ideas where to go next except retreading and just going pop-action where the starships and trek tech became more ridiculous props. There are no real sci-fi writers on his team and their recasting of TOS characters has hit a dead end and wasted potential. If they can't get Pine or Hemsworth, then the movie franchise is better off staying dead until a new producer/director; or use better genre actors such as Michael Fassbender or James McAvoy.
