If you mean 'The Force Awakens' it was Star Wars 4.

And it was a great movie in what has been a pretty poor franchise overall (two great movies, one poor movie, three iconically horrible movies and one "so bad it's good" effort.) Probably third in terms of quality after the first Star Wars movie and Irvin Kershners Empire Strikes Back.

I think we already have a thread for this movie...
Sorry.

If you mean 'The Force Awakens' it was Star Wars 4.
How is it 4?

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens (also known as Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens) is a 2015 American epic space opera film directed, co-produced, and co-written by J. J. Abrams."

Well I thought the opposite. I thought episodes 4, 5 and 6 were great. 1, 2 and 3 were so-so and 7 (or 4 for you) was pants.

I had a few issues with it myself:

- First of all, something that was even shown on the poster - the bad guy's light sabre. What's with the crossguard? The base of it is still part of the light sabre assembly, so it'd be vulnerable to another light sabre's strike, rendering it pointless: "The crossguard ... protected the user from a blade that was deliberately slid down the length of the blade to cut off or injure the hand."
- I thought the lead characters sucked.
- The planet-sized version of the deathstar was ridiculous. The empire at the height of its power was only just able to build the regular moon-sized deathstar. This one strained credibility beyond belief.
- The bad guy was totally ultra-mega lame. Also, why was he wearing that mask/helmet?
- Mind reading? Remember when Darth Vader had to resort to using technology to try and extract information from prisoners such as Han Solo and Leia? Well, the bad guy (he sucked so I forget his name) admitted himself in the movie that he wasn't as powerful as Vader, so how could he read people's minds?
- Han Solo manually came out of FTL speed so close to the planet that he had to dodge the trees. Kidding me?
- Too much faced-paced non-stop action for my liking, not enough drama or time to take things in.
- Totally ripped off A New Hope. Hidden document in droid, Millennium Falcon escape, mentor figure who gets had off, giant super weapon that gets destroyed...
- Script, story, acting...
etc.

Because the prequels were so bad, so absolutely devoid of artistic merit or cinematic craftmanship, that they don't actually count as movies.

Sorry, I don't find the crossguard thing particularly troubling. I remember a lot of nerd-rage (not using that term in a prejoritive way) about that when the first trailers started to appear, but as I said at the time Star Wars is fantasy, not science fiction, however much it might be set in space and have ships flying around. Most of the other gripes you have fall into that category (FTL, mind-reading, planet credibility etc). This is Wars not Trek.

Even Stephen Colbert got his teeth into that.

I also found the acting pretty great all around. It had some people who are on top of their game right now, Both Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac were both in this and were in what might be the best Sci Fi of 2015 (Ex Machina). You should watch that one if you haven't:

Their character traits are pretty much juxtaposed for both movies, and you gain an appreciation of how talented these two are at moving from role to role.

I am actually pumped for the bad guy in this. He is being played by Andy Serkis, who I've not seen mess up a role yet.

Aye, Andy Serkis is great. I meant the other guy...Kylo Ren? Also I meant Rey and particularly Finn that sucked for me.

As for the trek not wars real versus fiction thing...well, gotta draw the line somewhere and it's way too ridiculous for me.

I thought you meant Snoke, who has a lot of people complaining. I've seen few, even among the haters of TFA, who really dislike Kylo Ren.

That's fair enough. Everyone draws the line somewhere different and wherever it breaks credibility for you is where the movie breaks. However, Return of the Jedi was a movie in which the dreaded Stormtroopers, a ruthless army of no morality and technologically advanced weaponry, were defeated by an army of 3ft tall teddybears with spears. If we're talking stretching credibility to breaking point there is that, not to mention virtually everything that took place in the prequels.

I myself enjoy 3 of the 8 starwars movies (4 if you want to count the so-good-it's-bad oculus rift wookie erotica), so I am not really a starwars fan. I am an absolutely massive movie nerd though. I look at not just a movie, but how it's made, plot consistency, cinematography, direction, plot, etc. The Force Awakens was, by most standards, an extremely competantly made movie whether one enjoys it or not. Whereas there are several elements from the prequels (and one scene in particular) which are used in director and editing courses to teach aspiring movie makers how not to make movies.

I thought it was pretty good, certainly of the modern films it's by far and away the best. Yes, it's a complete rehash of all that went before but it had some decent one liners and kept my interest. Therefore in my finest Len Goodman voice I'll give it a SEVEN!

Yeah a 7 for me. It was brought down for the too many nods to the original trilogy many of which were good admittedly but it felt contrived in places. The plot barely held itself together at times and felt like ol chewie was back there in the writing dept holding it all together somehow while the writing team did it's level best to throw it all off the rails.

Enjoyable though that baddie was an enormous bell end and didn't engender any of the force and awe that the character should have.

I loved it , references to old non canon legends stuff in it.
and I found it different to EPIV in many ways and when it was like IV it was on purpose for narative reasons.

Rey was amazing , Finn was a new type of charecter for this new canon , it continued the story in such a fluid and well done manner.

The only thing I was not a fan of was star killer base , it served its point in the movie ; to weaken the new republic fleet and make the NR at war with the first order.
I feel its a movie aimed at fans who have read aftermath and other books like tarkin and have watched and played and read every canon source there is.
10/10 because it was to me at least the best thing I had seen sins EPV.

The movie being like EPIV is visual and part of the star wars plot style , it seems that VIII will be a very different movie so far , loved it and I have allready gone and pre ordered by copy of the blueray

The corssguard saber isan old Lightsaber style (not new to TFA), not the first of its kind and if its made of mandalorian iron it can not be broken with a saber. the vents is to be vent out unstable plasma due to a cracked kyber cristal.
Star killer base a was planet made into a base
Kylo ren is a deep and intresting charecter who , is conflicted between the light and the dark.
Mind reading skills have been in star wars for ages. Vader is more a swords fighter and a good pilot than sith who uses the force to fight.
Leaving Hyperspace late has been done in other Star wars canon plots

I loved it. The only thing I didn't like was that Rey (with no Jedi training) was all of a sudden able to defeat Kylo Ren when Ren had been trained by Luke fraken' Skywalker!

Hillarious and pretty accurate :)
I still liked the movie tho

I gave it a 6.

It was a decent film, but I couldnt take a lot of it seriously.

Way better than the prequels though so that is a good thing.

When she touches the lightsaber she uses psychometric force powers , gives her basic understanding of many elements of the force.
She is by no means a master but to sins kilo only had basic teachings in the force him and rey were on the same level.

She has allways been a good at learning , her speeder for example was built by herself.

I get the feeling they have not read the new canon books... shame

Screen Junkies have finally done their honest trailer for TFA.

The ''its EPIV'' arguement is silly IMHO. the movie has its moments were its like it , just like EPI yet... its only on the surface , the movie very fast goes in a complete oposite direction.

Its a hero's start movie , there is only so many ways it can go...

If you look at the details read the books and graphic novels you will find how amazing TFA , its no ESB (best movie of all time) but I prefere it to the prequels , EPVI and even IV. and hey , there are no yuuzhan vong in it (because they are not canon anymore ! thank goodness)

The only things that were the same were :
The desert setting on jakku and droid with important info but because the info was 100% of a different sort , for a different goal and had a different resault it goes somewere else.
Starkiller base , its based on the deathstar and has been built up from the first days of the first order on a ice/snow planet so its very plausible and it actualy wins a massive victory by killing ALL the republics fleet leaving only the resistance left ! think of how big that is , its massive part of the saga history.
everything else was different beyond a few references.

and everyone should read the books , comics , TVshow and games (not the old EU with lepi and vong in it but the new unified canon stuff) such as a new dawn , aftermath , fallen stars , vader and the visual guides you will learn that its not only one of the best star wars movies but it has tones of lore in it !
Just the new blasters of the stormtroopers have more lore and background info than charecters from most other movies.

Is the movie perfect? no , its not ESB and has some bits I did not like such as the rathnaar , a bit pointless and it had burp in it and I dont want any more burps in star wars (ugh , something that EPVI invented)
I understand if ppl dont like it but it a movie that made me happy and its lore is so deep you could drown in it
