Star Wars: Dangerous

I'm sure most of you noticed this at this time. If I close my eyes I feel like I'm on a Star Wars game, and that's not necessarily a good thing (at least for me not a good one). Some people pointed that this is just an alpha and things can change in the development process (and they are right) but that's not the case for all related sound matters, because they normally have a very defined style at this point. Liked some games mainly for the sound stuff (this includes music and fx) in the past, but also hated so many for the same reason so that's why I'm worried.

What I do not understand is why this great game can't have his own style, and need to get all these clear similarities from another franchise. :(

I'm sure most people will just criticize my opinion in a bad way after this, but I needed to say what I said.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Are you saying the sound is too reminiscent of Star Wars? That's not the impression I have from the Alpha. I rather like the sound design. Well, to each his own.

I really like the sound of the sidewinder engines as they accelerate and decelerate :D

Hey man don't be put off giving a critical opinion, I believe right now they are more important than fan boy raves.

I'm guessing you're refering to the soundtrack? It has similarities and personally I find that to be a good thing. As for the rest of the SFX I can't say I agree, and that's coming from a huge Star Wars fan. Anything in particular that caught your attention?

Can you elaborate a little on what exactly makes it feel like a Star Wars game for you? When I watch the videos and such from the Alpha players, I get the feeling it's like FFE on steroids. A little Wing Commander-ish perhaps, but that's just my impression.

As for individual 'style', I think any spaceflight simulator will have a lot of similarities in some respects. That's something you're simply never going to be able to shake off.

come on guys,

of course its looks like SW, what we have seen until now ? combat combat combat and more combat...

it's only alpha stage 2... sure with the next updates the differences and the style will be better defined.

Elite can't be StarWars ... because Elite it's simply much better than SW !! :D

I think the combat is reminiscent of the X-Wing series what with systems/power management but that's no bad thing is it?

I like the music in the game so far, hope to hear more! But if the music offends its already optional in the audio menu.

I was thinking the same thing watching the videos. I think the sfx when thrusting is reminiscent of SW (the sputtering sort of sound).

Does it remind me of Star Wars? Yes and no. To be honest, it just doesn't strike me as a bad thing. The aesthetic is strong with this one.

I dunno, none of the ingame sound effects strike me as very "Star Wars-y" in my opinion....the music (when i turn it up) is pretty good and sounds like original content as well.

Not to speak of sound, I have recently to look, at the TV, five episodes of SW. And well I found that there are similarities between ED and SW. But it is normal, it takes place in the future and in the galaxy

If I closed my eyes I dont want to feel like i'm in a game, either Star Wars or Elite, I want to feel I'm a space pilot. I want a space sim.
When Luke flies the X-wing he doesn't hear the music, it's only there for the people back home watching him. (Star Wars was a documentary, I find your lack of faith disturbing)

There should not be any mysterious source narrative music in Elite, once you're in your ship any music should be from the ships speaker system and reverberate, or sound like it's being pumped into your pilots ear piece, that's if you have chosen to play it.

I dont have any problem with the score, Star Wars like or not, but it needs some justification. Is it also context based, does it change when combat is engaged? This would also need explaining by the ships computer playing music to strategically aid the pilots emotions and ability.

The engines do sound like the pod race vehicles from Phantom Menace.
Dont have a problem with that, but would like Tie fighter sounds as preference.

When I first watched the Capital Ship video I was reminded of Star Wars, there is a certain few cords that are identical to some of the Star Wars music (Phantom Menace in particular) and the acceleration sounds remind of Speeder Bikes from Return of the Jedi. Personally I like the speeder sound, but not so much the music rip, oh god how I hated the newer films..

I think its a fair to suggest the music from the Damocles video seemed heavily influenced, if not similar to some music found in the newer Star Wars films. It was still a great score but I understand what the OP is talking about.

I'm hoping that the music written for the game is as original as possible. Still, I'd imagine its not trivial to write a score and theme soundtrack.

Its not just a case of if you don't like it switch it off. Its an area of real importance for any game because its ends up becoming a large part of a games identity.

Many successful games have a great unique music score, i.e. Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Portal 2. Hopefully Elite will too :)

the first time I heard the music I thought of John Williams's score for star wars, it's mainly the brass movements.

I like it though, I think the music really complements the game.

Remember, all the best composers have 'borrowed' from those before them. ;)
