General / Off-Topic Star Wars : The Force Awakens

Booked my tickets for this just now, cannot wait. The last starwars movie i seen at the cinema was Return of the jedi in 1984, the new sequels were crap tbh.

I really love the look of the new (well actually old, but never seen in a movie), Sith Lightsaber ;)

That lightsaber is the silliest things in Star Wars since the idea of Midichlorians (for the record, in my headcanon they do not exist and Qui-Gon just did a normal medical blood test that had nothing to do with the force).

The way a guard functions, mechanically, is that it prevents the opponent's blade to slide along your own blade until it reaches, touches and injures your hand or arm. Instead it hits the cross guard and is stopped there. Mechanically, this forces the opponent's blade into the very notch where guard and blade meet; this part was therefore typically reinforced and not sharpened. Now, in that lightsaber with its cross-guard, this very notch is the most vulnerable part, because it consist of solid matter and not a laser-plasma-force-field-whatever blade. The enemy's blade would cut right through it and your saber in half, and then your arm.

And before anyone interjects that the SW lore has certain expensive materials that can withstand a lightsaber blade (I am not sure whether that is even official canon) - why then not construct the guard itself out of this material, too? That would remove a lot of the dangers that arise from a cross guard made like a lightsaber-blade. Don't forget that it is one of the centerpieces of the lightsaber that it is so dangerous that even with lots of training, to an ordinary person without force-sensitivity it would pose as great a danger as to themselves an opponent's weapon.

But then, it is likely that a cross guard would be unnecessary anyway. In most lightsaber fights it can be seen that two blades that connect never slide off one another. Instead, when forced against aech other, they can even somehow interlock.

Last but not least: it doesn't even look good with he cross guard in the first place. Lightsabers are meant to be elegant, sleek things. Therefore I believe the only reason why the thing exists is because the maker did it out of pure vanity and without any practical reason whatsoever, maybe saw an ancient steel sword in a museum and thought that would look cool as a lightsaber. Even a Sith may sometimes err and have bad taste. :D

I prefer to wait before going to see the movie. I do not like to be with hundreds of people in a cinema room. People who speak, children who make noise, people who eat popcorn, people who get up to use the toilet, etc ...

Not a fan of JJ Abrams - not just the lens flare but, like Peter Jackson, he is a fan of silly over-the-top CGI "stunts" that have no tension or sense of danger because they just look too stupid to even touch our human senses of risk, harm, etc. We know far too easily that they're CGI so whatever happens we don't really feel it. Compare with other films like Mission Impossible and the Bourne films, for example - still OTT of course, but kept within a boundary that we can still relate to, and create tension and wow from.

That said, I've booked my 17/12, 1 minute past midnight ticket already.

Why is Mark Hamill not on the promo poster - that's what I want to know! Hopefully it's because he only appears towards the end, in a surprise kind of way and not because he's gone bad - that would be a totally suck storyline.

Same here, teenagers are the worst, they mess about and fight with each other and constantly fiddle with their phones. Me being a grumpy old fart, I usually end up having a "word" along the lines of "If you don't want to watch the film, <Please vacate the premises> off out!" :D
Done that a few times, and to approving noises, nods and gestures from others in the cinema trying to enjoy the film. Usually an usher will then turn up and have further words with the offensive little gits :D

The cinema should be banned for children. However, permission to download the film on their smartphone

:D

Has anyone ever thought of hiring out the cinema just for yourself or some friends?, wonder how much that would cost? :)

I have seen most of the fan theories and ideas........but there is something I have not seen mentioned.........Are the Ewoks gonna bite the dust? We see Vaders helmet, Some space weapon firing, and then a forest getting burned and blown away.........my wife picked up on it and is not impressed if so, as the teddies got her in to star wars those many years ago.......I'm all for the fan rage against Jar Jar and even the Ewoks in Return were not a huge plus for me........but dayamn...........really? That's harsh if so........

Ticket price * number of seats. For that kind of money you could set up a kind of "home cinema" yourself, with HD beamer, surround sound etc. :p

Edit: Just found this and had to chuckle:

I'm glad that I already have my ticket for the Midnight premiere for the night of the 16th/17th December. Star Wars is my favourite movie series (the original trilogy, not the prequels) and it's finally coming back in its true form! I really can't wait!
