General / Off-Topic Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Coming Soon)

Nothing to do with a female character, it's the whole atmosphere in the movie that is filled with PC.
I mean I love Aliens with Ripley as the main character and many more just like it, don't push the misogynist just because it's PC to used that as quick as possible if something is not that good.

I dislike the new ST:D, not because of a female character, just simply because it sucks, terrible actors and horrible screenwriters.
ST:V was actually much better than ST:D.

Could you give a couple of examples of the PC, I'm sitting here scratching my head.

The new Star Wars movies have little attraction for me. See Mark Hamill's remarks on how Luke has been written.

I did not know about this, but after looking for info about it i found a quote from the director Rian Johnson:

"From my point of view the Jedi are evil!"

Which probably explains a lot of the confusion (and certainly my disinterest in the New Star Wars). If that is what you took from the original films (that the Jedi were evil), then god knows where your personal moral compass is at and what the relative terms 'good' and 'evil' actually mean to you! I guess in that world the Empire is the force for Good?

Ok well i only saw the first of the New Star Wars films before deciding they were not for me, so my experience of them is less than yours. Overall that one film seemed way less PC than pretty much all the previous films to me, especially in relation to the story they tell and (importantly) what kids watch and learn from. In the context of the original films lessons about 'good' and 'evil' the New Star Wars seems pretty much in love with 'evil'. Not something i want my kids to watch or learn from.

Well no real comments before I've seen it, but I smell even more PC in this one

Let's see what is on the internet about it.

As I said, it's a feeling, not factual, only when I see it I can give examples, maybe I'm all wrong and it's just a good movie?

I always have to chuckle when right-wing Americans call pretty much everything 'pc gone mad!'. :) Oh no, less sexism, what are we to do? What is next? Abolishing slavery? Livable wages? Affordable healthcare? Quick, hide your daughters, those blasted SJWs are coming!

Seriously though, star wars without chicks in metal bikinis is fine. We'll survive. :)

Have you seen the scene in Clerks where they discuss the deaths of all the independent construction workers that died on on the death star? :)

Any rebel group is just a bunch of terrorists to the relevant authorities. Rest assured that in plenty of countries the Empire is seen as the evil USA, and iirc China never liked the heroic rebels. Its all perspective. Not that I care, Star Wars has always been 'sci-fi-for-kids', with paperthin characters, little nuance and no shades of grey. They can keep it like that imho, no need to turn it into a proper sci-fi thing.

I read that and to be honest it seemed barking mad to me. The "problems" they listed were (my opinions in brackets) :

Rename slave Leia merchandise to Hutt Slayer Leia
(good idea slavery is bad and the term makes a lot of people very uncomfortable).

Have more empowered female characters
(good idea the Ripley factor improves movies).

The writers of Rogue One were not politically neutral
(don't care it's just a movie made by people who are allowed to have political opinions)

Some people who worked on it don't like Trump
(I can understand that I think he may tweet us to WW3 through sheer stupidity)

The empire was described as white supremacist
(yep I can see that they are more than a bit goosestepping and stormtroopery and their officers uniforms are extremely SS)

LOL exactly, renaming because some could be offended. Really?

And yet in a game like Elite we can still buy and sell SLAVES!

I watched this, but it really didn't grab me. I dunno.... I think I'm burned out (again) on the new SW movies. I was stoked for the first one and then for Rogue One, but now I feel like "ok...these are cool and all, but I'm not feeling the need to pay theater admission prices to see them."

Snoked maybe, was Snoke also in the Harry Potter franchise, I get confused?

Yep why not.

Relative age of the fans and the fact in ED they are effectively just a number on a spreadsheet, not a toy that comes with it's own neck chain could explain the difference.

Honestly I fine all this very much PC, and if you look at it in the light of the aged it was made in, silly to rename it.
And children today are much more ahead than most of us old folks are today, so they don't need a force field around them all the time.

I do find it ok to not make new toys, but this urge to rename something from another time period, just laughable.

LOL and she was even a caucasian, I should be offended [haha]

I was born in the 70's when racism was still very much an open and acceptable thing and not being racist was considered subversive, the world (well the bit I live in) is a much better place now that it isn't quite so (openly) prevalent so on balance PC is a good thing. If that means renaming an old toy for new manufacturing runs it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Besides which the collectors with genuine original slave Leia's will be quids in.

You can enjoy retirement playing with your slave doll wearing a pointy white hood if you like, I just don't want to join in :p.

Man that was a low blow, don't get me started, I hate racists.

Why is it you people always start with the name calling when it doesn't go your way?

I thought we were talking rubbish about the insidious social impact of renaming a decades old star wars figure that if I remember correctly had bad hands and couldn't hold a blaster, a far more serious issue. I didn't take the conversation overly seriously and was joking hence the frivolous addition of the little tongue out face.

Well in that case, you're forgiven, but that pointy white hat remark triggered my woo :D

Cheers!

Why do you want the slave thing in so much? What does it add?
