Star Within a Star: Weird Stellar 'Hybrid' Discovered

Wonder if they'll add this to the game.. would be a rare thing to go and travel to see.

In 1975, renowned astrophysicists Kip Thorne, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif., and Anna Żytkow, of the University of Cambridge, UK, assembled a theory on how a large dying star could swallow its neutron star binary partner, thus becoming a very rare type of stellar hybrid, nicknamed a Thorne-Żytkow object (or TŻO). The neutron star — a dense husk of degenerate matter that was once a massive star long since gone supernova — would spiral into the red supergiant’s core, interrupting normal fusion processes.

According to the Thorne-Żytkow theory, after the two objects have merged, an excess of the elements rubidium, lithium and molybdenum will be generated by the hybrid. So astronomers have been on the lookout for stars in our galaxy, which is thought to contain only a few dozen of these objects at any one time, with this specific chemical signature in their atmospheres.

Could be a useful resource point to scoop up and sell. It would probably be jealously guarded by terrible green frogs who hate sitcoms.

''Holy ...star''

pretty incredible news, i didn't know about this kind of hybrid star until now.

thanks for posting

that is Quite interesting... would be a great location to scoop Rubidium.. although i'm NOT sure if that would be a valuable commodity . and even then, i'm not sure I would want to get close enough to THAT star to extract it.

I hope these kinds of discoveries make it into the final game. Would be interesting to see what Frontier would do if something is discovered in one of the well traveled systems from ED.

FD has already stated that any new stellar discoveries as well as all existing ones will be included in Elite: Dangerous.

Very cool article though. Thank you, OP.

Dear Mods...

This needs moving to the Astronomy forum. Nice thread though. Star within a star... We need this in the game!

Unfortunately this one is in another galaxy... and you probably wouldn't notice the difference between a red supergiant and a red supergiant with a neutron star in its core 7 million km deep! The only difference is a very subtle one in the spectrum of light emitted by the star.

What I'm wondering is if any of these special seeded things out there will include a "Dyson Sphere" somewhere out there... it would indeed be a dark system then .

I think if you manage to scoop up the star and then actually sell it you'll be good on money for life... Or three... :D

Another piece of the puzzle... So very epic. Rare but hope to see this in ED. Time to update the procedural generation algo  Art team needs to put up some pics of a hybrid star next :D Mainly because ED looks so damn gorgeous especially the stars up close and personal!
