Starbase

After playing Elite, not having any ... or much ... in the way of tutorials is not a problem for me.

Also, anyone used to the run to Hutton Orbital, you'll be happy to hear (or unhappy, depending on how you feel about the run to Hutton Orbital) long journey times are the norm in Starbase.

There is enough help in the form of websites, Youtube and people on Discord to help you, and pay it forward and help others when you can answer a question they have. I've lost count of how many times I've answered "Where can I sell my ship?"

Starbase IS in early access, so of course there will be bugs and issues, but it seems the devs are fixing things. The servers can handle insane numbers of players and objects even for old PCs like mine.

If Dual Universe and Space Engineers interested you, give Starbase a look, you'll probably like it.

OA gave it a try as well:

Interestingly, I ran into the same easy build error that OA did, and I too was convinced that I just wasn’t doing something right. I’m early enough in the process that I may just delete my character and start over (if that is possible)

Easybuild is somewhat broken atm so i dont recommend using it for the time being.
No need to delete the character, you can restart the tutorial under settings-tutorial.
You can also have like 10 Laborers at once and sell them where it says "Space is big, buy a ship"-building. Spawn your ship there and then you will have a sell option.
Noteworthy also, that all ships you buy, require both, credits and materials..
If you dont want to mine all the mats, you can also buy mats at the Auction House, located at the second floor at the Market.
Auction House is quite interesting feat as it runs in real time and you can see what others buy and how the prices change.

I also recommend checking out the ship designer. Takes a while to learn, but when you get to know your way around the menus and controls, you might soon wonder, "where did 8hrs of my life go??" ;)

Some features asked for in Elite Dangerous:
  • Station building
  • Ship Interiors
  • EVA / On foot gameplay
  • Be able to play without owning a ship
  • A single open mode server for all players
  • Player owned capital ships

All of these things are either in Starbase or (in the case of capital ships) are apparently coming.

I'm not saying Starbase is a superior or better game than Elite Dangerous, it's a different style of game, but it can scratch an itch Elite Dangerous isn't providing if you liked games like Space Engineers or Dual Universe.

Holy far distance traveling Batman!
I can guarantee that you can make any trip in Elite and is nothing compared traveling 2000km in the belt in Starbase. And i made one-year long circumnavigation expedition in Elite so i should know what im talking about.. :D

What a journey it has been..

So, me and my friend left Origin station 4 days ago in his long distance hauler, meaning to go and find the more expensive materials, since they are located far in the belt.
For navigation, you only have ISAN system, (Integrated System Autonomous Navigation) where you have a navigational origo at the Origin stations and navigate using the X,Y,Z grid.

In this picture for example, our ship is located approx 912km from the Origin stations and 2km above the middle point of the belt, "heightwise".
Max range for ISAN is currently approx 1000km, so if you fly over 1000km, you will lose contact to the beacon and thats when you are lost if you are in the belt as you dont know where is up, down, right, left or any other direction. In other words, youre pretty much f*****. :D

Somewhere deep in the belt:

First, we headed under the belt as its the fastest way of traveling since you dont need to watch for the asteroids.
600km later, we took course almost directly upwards, (Y coordinate) and began approx 250km journey to the center point of the belt.
At some point we needed to refuel our fuel rods and thats when the first mishap happened. My friend was a bit hasty jumping off the ship and while ship needs forward thrusters for braking, he jumped right in front of the thruster, vaporizing him instantly, putting him back to the Origin station. :D
So, he immediately went to ship designer to make a rescue shuttle to get back to me.
Approx 8hrs later he was back and the ship at the right is his rescue shuttle:

At that point i had made already my way to the center of the belt and had found some rare materials, when we hit another mishap.
The rescue ship was running out of propellant, so we needed to figure out how to refuel it.
Luckily, in Starbase you can refill ships from other ships so we plugged the connection between the ships resource bridges, set the other bridge to flow out and other flow in and refill was under way.

Unfortunately, theres some weird bug atm which causes the fueled propellant to disappear if you touch the ship with any kind of tool. Or thats our own reasoning.
So, we needed to refuel many times and soon realized that we cant refuel much longer so that the main ship gets back to the station.
Soon we realized that we are not going to make it, when we got the idea that we could craft small propellant tanks (we had only small tanks researched in the research tree), but for that we needed ice and for tough luck, we were at the zone in the belt where was no ice. Just a day earlier we passed the zone full of ice..
We were really in trouble getting back...

Next day our surprise was big when the main ships tanks were all full.
Apparently, theres a bug which causes the propellant to mystically "return to sender" for a reason or another. Obviously, we filled out a bug report. :D

So, we were good for a while and continued to collect rarer materials and slowly heading back to home.

Next, we found out that the rescue ship was running out of generator coolant, as my friend didnt put radiators in the ship, so we needed to craft coolant.
We found some materials for the coolant crafting but soon realized that this isnt going to get us back, so we decided to rip few radiators out of the main ship and install them to the rescue ship. It worked, for a while..
Then the main ship got into trouble as it didnt have enough radiators to keep the generators cool, so i couldnt fly with 100% throttle all the time as the batteries started to dry out.

There was few mishaps more but i cant recollect all of them, it was really hectic trip and we had genuine "Apollo 13 feeling" when we finally saw the station 4 days later. :D
Yes, we got back mainly because of a bug for our favor, but still.. (without that bug we would have been forced to leave the small ship and go look for the ice in the big ship).

It was approx 2000km trip, but never i have been so genuinely worried that we cant make it home. Truly great small trip.
We made few big mistakes, first, leaving for the trip with way too few spare parts, crafting materials and with way too big confidence that nothing could go wrong.

I have circumnavigated the galaxy for one year in Elite, but it was nothing compared to this...:D
This game gives you ultimate tools to get into real trouble if you are not careful and plan your things properly.

Eagerly waiting for the next trip..

My issue with StarBase is 'air' & 'planets'. Air in particular and pressurised ships.

Space Engineers is, for me, the best game for travel in space. I did millions of km from start points on a number of occasions and the game remained stable (late 2016 onwards, prior to that the game was very unstable). ED players would say 'millions' that's nothing. But it is because they are real km's based on the games scale. Whereas in ED you simply jump from a small area into another small area. So ly's mean nothing at all, just figures on the screen.
I used my own speed mod (2000m/s) in SE & a few jump drives (10,000km jumps). But you are always in the same space not in a different instance like ED or most space games. SE jumps push you along in the same space.
ED for me has never felt like space travel, or how I would imagine space travel. I think of it as long and lonely, having to maintain your ship along the way, find the resources etc. ED is simply instance to instance, your never in the same space in ED, so travel feels 'small' & arcadish.

Empyrion has instances which are a little annoying, but it does have air & pressurised area's, not as good as SE, but good enough. Plus a big yes for me in Empyrion is the planets, they are some of the best I've come across in space games. O.k. they aren't the prettiest, but they feel like planets you would find in sci-fi which is what I love. Also the weather systems in Empyrion are the best around, space game wise.

DU is just a mess really and will probably fail at some stage, which is a shame because it had potential.

So if Starbase gets air/oxygen and pressurised areas and you can move around the ship whilst travelling, its a game right up my street. Although its mp, isn't it, that can be a drawback.

I would love SE & EGS to mate and have an offspring, that would be heaven. However the way I play Empyrion, to get over the travel, is make myself have to be so far from a planet before warping. Gives me a little more of the travel feel. Still not as good as SE for travel though.

^ You can move around the ship while traveling, as long as you remember to activate the mag boots. Although its not healthy to leave the cockpit if you are deep in the belt.. surprise attacks from the 'roids are very common, especially when flying in thick fog clouds..
Also, what comes to pressurized ships, characters in SB dont need pressurizing so i dont think its going to be a thing, not at the moment at least. :D
There is gravity at the moons of Eos, so there is that..

Yeah, it is in my 'keep an eye on it file'. Like I said, it is a game right up my street. We'll see.

"Made it myself and saved some money.." :poop:

Awfully unfinished, but i had a long struggle with the thrusters to get the ship fly straight and when i finally solved those problems, i got into hurry to get the ship out of the editor.
Doesnt matter, theres so many mistakes in the design that i am going to sell that as soon as i get the money back in couple of trips.
Head is full of new ideas and i cant wait to get back to the designer.. :p

There is nothing like designing and flying your own ships.
Mhmm. You probably haven't seen my ships. I made a Star Destroyer like in From the Depths. It wasn't very stable. A submarine that fired a supercaitation shell from underwater. The controllers kinda worked, but not very well.
Actually From the Depths changed me. Before in Space Engineers I would start with the shape and fit function inside. With From the Depths I transitioned to function and built the shape around that. Makes for more interesting designs. They definitely are kinda unique. And definitely mine.

Its possible, yeah, but most players just make cubes/square shaped ships since they are the easiest ones to make.
That Viper maker has some serious skills there..

What the.. is that a.. yeah.. damn, its a nightclub, not a ship. :D
(actually its a ship disguised as nightclub)
(or is it the other way around..? )
