Starfighter Tries Again

New Kickstarter for Impeller Studios and Starfighter.

First KS didn't fund, but they are back and trying again with new and improved campaign.

Interesting...They should work on the narrative though... saying they have the "technical depth and customization of World of Warships" probably isn't the best comparison.

I play that WoWS, and I like it, but I wouldn't use it as a standard candle for "technical depth and customization".

Backed. I hope they make it this time. I really like their approach to skill based starship PvP.

There's something dodgy about their presentation video...can't quite put my finger on what exactly.
It looks kind of interesting. Not sure it's something other games out there aren't trying to do now, and those other games look more promising to me.

Yeah, I know what you mean, it all felt a bit 'flat' somehow, but I love that the lead artist was so nearly called Afterburner!

Also at the end 'there's lots of new reasons to back us' - well tell us about them then.

The UI looks interesting, I liked the 'giving you less to tell you more' ethos.

Hope they do well!

With them only asking 150K this time around, I'll bet they make it.

I backed to encourage another space sim. Competition is never a bad thing.

I know what you mean with the dodgy feel. Honestly their first Kickstarter Campaign was sort of a mess. (They don't seem to be very good at self-marketing)

But from the interviews I have read it seems like they are huge space nerds, they have thought a LOT about their game mechanics and in-game lore and they definitely have the development experience to pull this off. Also, I think they have set themselves realistic goals and I think they are definitely capable of delivering what they promise. And that's something I would very much like to play :)

I would like to know why they ask for less, and what that means. Or did they answer that already somewhere?

i like the approach a lot ... ships without shields ! ... but the graphics looks very 2D/flat - in a promo video. I'll give it a pass :)

It's addressed in the "Why we need your help" section near the bottom:

"Secondly, our previous Kickstarter goal was $250,000, and while we attracted 5,389 backers, we only reached 90% of our goal, so no funds came from it. We kept working on the game, just like we promised we would, and we’ve come a long way since then. We've made great progress both in the development of Starfighter Inc. and in solidifying our team. What has resulted is a stronger, clearer, and more detailed vision, with everyone fully committed to the realization and completion of a unique and compelling game experience. We lowered our goal to reflect all of the progress made since then. It really is that simple."

Edit: I did a little more research and noticed that the original kickstarter promised 6 ships and 16 player multiplayer, whereas the current campaign is aiming for 3 ships and 6 player matches. I don't know if it's enough to account for $100,000; but it seems like a very different milestone.

Their focus on hard-science in a space sim could make it standout. I think the appeal is more niche. I like the minimalist HUD.

Worth a (small) punt also. Generally, I'm done with Kickstarters, but I don't mind a "wee dabble" on something like this. Probably more off the back of their X-Wing credentials, to be honest.

Looks like Starfighter will be free to play? :O:S

I was a little disappointed that they both allow mouse/keyboard as a control scheme (kind of makes a mockery of people who spend money on actual kit for flight when the m/kb combo is easier, but I appreciate the accessibility that brings to new players - $200 on top of anything you pay for the game is a significant investment) and that they provide a dampening mode. Even though they liken it to training wheels, it takes a lot of skill out of the flying, particularly if you can switch modes mid-flight. Whether or not what they say they want to do -- FA-on costing more fuel -- will work remains to be seen.

With all that said, a dedicated PvP game predicated on Newtonian movement sounds awesome. E:D's in-universe PvP is wholly unsatisfying as the game is not really built with it in mind (imo), and its CQC component, while entertaining for short stretches, really suffers from being absolutely barebones, with very little elaboration.

I'm going to back Starfighter Inc. for beta level access. It's a great concept, and $35 is very little investment.

It sure looks interesting. I'll keep an eye on that one.

General rule of thumb for me, i never back anything. Lol
Mainly, because i can't afford it. :p
Partly because i always want to at least see gameplay footage, not shot by the Dev team. But ideally a playable demo. Lol

If they make their funding levels, I'll have a spare Beta key you can try and see for yourself if you like it. Promo videos are hit and miss.

The "hard science" approach is definitely interesting, but i'm not interested enough in another pew-pew game to back it.
I wish them luck though.
