Starflight 3 crowdfunding now!

Every now and again I find an interesting space game I think might be worth bringing to the attention of the denizens of this forum - invariably however in what im now calling 'Rilzi's Law' I end up comparing it in some way to Starflight.

There a reason for this - the two space sims I played the most were Frontier First Encounters and Starflight 2. Since then we've got a new Elite game, and now there's a new Starflight game in dev.

Heres the link to the campaign,

And the announcement video:

I'd like to say something witty here but I'm tired and was about to go to bed when the announcement from fig popped up.

"If Starflight didn't exist, Gearbox wouldn't exist. That means Borderlands would not exist." - Randy Pitchford, CEO Gearbox Software

Does that also mean that 'Aliens: Colonial Marines' would not exist? On second thoughts....

That's cool! I really enjoyed Starflight when I was a kid. I have an original box of Starflight 2 in my closet. :)

How is this different from NMS?

Starflight is a game series that predates NMS by several decades and so if anything NMS and others have a lot of Starflight's DNA in *them*.

It is not crafting focused at all, but rather exploration and diplomacy focused. You have a ship and a crew and you go out to explore the universe, make contact with aliens, and uncover the main story. Along the way you'll collect resources and upgrade your ship and train your crew.

I really enjoyed the surface buggy driving, looking for ruins and artifacts. The heavy gravity worlds were especially challenging as you couldn't stay on the surface very long.

For reference (and great justice!)

But seroiusly, without Starflight, we probably would not have Star Control 2 either, which would be a dark alternate future, indeed.

But gearbox aren't making it, as far as I can see the only gearbox link is a quote on the web site

Indeed.

However, I guess you can argue whether or not anyone needs $800k for this project. I have no idea how much it would cost to develop what they're planning.

Wasteland 3 developers asked for about $3M on that platform which is realistic for a low-budget 2.5D production and they have experience in developing the similar modern-era predecessor Wasteland 2.

$800k is worth nothing in the current era and it looks to much like the $500k goal for Star Citizen Kickstarter and we all know how that ended.

Sorry, looks fishy to me.

As with any kick-starter - buyer beware.

For the KS goal amount, i dont think Gearbox are in any need of actual financing, they are using the crowd funding mechanism as a market study tool so they know how fast their product can sell ahead of time. I'm not saying i support this way of using crowd funding, but they are not the first ones to do it.

I wish them good fortune, but won't be backing, despite the fact they have a more realistic advertised development time than most. It just doesn't meet my present, far more stringent, backing qualifications.

This exactly: don't put any money into a crowdfunding project that you couldn't afford to otherwise throw into a fire.

I only throw money at crowdfunding games like this that I am highly excited for. If Starflight isn't a part of your childhood or look exactly like something that you would love, there's no reason not to wait for it to launch and check out aome reviews first.
