My crew and I are sitting on the inner edge of the Cygnus Arm (the outer arm, not the "Cygnus"-Orion arm), about 11,000LY from Sol, staring across the 2000LY gulf between us and the Perseus Arm. We're having trouble plotting a course further than 350LY. On our way out we had to journey an extra 2500LY out of our way to find a star bridge.
I've been discussing our options with the crew. We agreed we've been out here for months and are all exploration-weary. My navigator isn't fond of using jumponium and would prefer to come back the way we came. If we could jump the gulf though, it would take weeks off our journey.
I'd like to risk it but I've only got 4KG of polonium. I do have enough vanadium for 44 jumps but 70LY might not be enough. I have about 16 jumps worth of niobium for a little extra kick.
After much deliberation and debate, I've made the decision to dip our toes in the water and to reevaluate the situation before we cross to the point of no return. If the first and second jumps require polonium I'm sticking my tail between my legs, chickening out and finding a star bridge. Probably the Perseus Transit.
I'll be updating this thread if anything interesting happens.
Feel free to chime in with any council you're willing to share. Anecdotes etc. all welcome.
Fly safe, CMDRs
