Stars and nebula

Are the stars and nebula that make up the backdrop while flying around "real" objects you can travel to? Or are they just part of a skybox that surrounds us? Would it be possible to supercruise to a distant object given enough time/fuel?

Yes and no.

They are real in the sense that these stars are placed accurately in the sky depending on where you are in the galaxy. When you jump between systems the sky will change accordingly to reflect your new position.

You will most likely not be able to travel between them in the final game due to the fuel mechanic. Unless we are talking about star systems with multiple stars that is...that is already possible in the current version of the game.

Nebulas aren't in yet, but they are being worked on as we speak. So far there are only stars, the Milky Way and other galaxies rendered in the sky.

Do you know if nebulas are going to be in for release?

I don't "know", but I would be very surprised if they didn't get them in before release. Personally I kind of expect them not to far into the future, maybe even at the end of the month. At least a first pass at them.

There's no indication that they won't :) As for PG game, you can swap in and out certain elements you want to work on, but don't want to show yet (for example PB1 lacked nice hugely improved clouds we have now in PB2). Painted skybox till Alpha 3 had nebulae so...intent is clear.

I understood that there technically was still a skybox, it's just that it encompasses the entire galaxy now. The vast majority of the items on the visible backdrop are generated from the starmap according to one's position.

Part of the fuel scooping aspect involves being able to collect from gas clouds, so I imagine we'll see something soon. I don't know if we'll see the scifi colerful nebula in the background in most cases though, nebulae are like a very thin fog, up close you can tell there's something there, but it's hard to see close or not. But there might be circumstances where lighting and arrangement make it more apparent.

Hopefully they will use a bit of artistic license and make nebulas more apparent than in real life.
