Stars: Eta Carinae

Nebula's are huge objects. We look at them from huge distances and see details. What would you see when you're inside a nebula... Dunno? :(

I imagine, if the nebula is dense/illuminated enough, it would maybe look like a faint film over the starscape from the inside. In extreme cases, it would probably look like a starless black void with illuminated blurry spots where nearby stars are hidden within, but I don't think dust/gas clouds of that size get that dense.

I assume they're actually going to look a bit prettier in the game though. ;)

We should make a list of all interesting and unusual stars, where they are and what they look like.

Then the devs could use that list and wouldn't have to compile one themselves, it would probably be a lot easier for them to then just add those stars they think they can realize in game.

I think the devs are already on it — wasn't there a DB quote to this very effect a few months ago? (compiling lists of ‘interesting’ phenomena and rarities)

I think the devs already have such a list but it could be useful for the players :)

This raises a question, eventually will we gain access to better jump drives/farther means of ftl? It would be a shame if 99% of those 400 bil systems could never be accessed

I think Frontier did say that better hyperdrives would be available - I get the feeling that if you really want to explore - you need an explorers ship and loadout.

I quite like the idea myself!

Probable max range of hyperspace jump drives: 30ly
Distance: 7723ly
Number of jumps required: 257

I'd say you are optimist to make the max jump 30ly!

In order to enable routing through star clusters (groups) it probably will be much less. ;)

Probably, I like to err on the side of optimism to demonstrate that even with an uber drive it would be a journey of epic proportions!

Realistically, I think it'll take an organized group of players flying many ships, including as yet undefined logistics vessels and/or forward staging posts to make a serious attempt at those distances, and that it will take them a wee bit longer than 30 minutes per system. ;)

I'm hoping max range with the most efficient drive and ship dedicated to exploration will be closer to 75-100 lightyears per jump. Enough to get around fairly well without making it too easy to cross the galaxy.

The nebula may not even look like that, if it is possible to visit at some point, that's how it appeared 7723 years ago, plus the 1286 years from now that ED is set.
Will be interesting to see if the dev's add in 9009 years of projected evolution to the nebula. and what that may look like :D

Sadly, I don't think it is going to happen. It would have to look different with more distance between you and the nebula. I would be amazing to see for sure but I don't think devs are planning this.

They're taking the loooooong view. If we can explore everything now (or within a year or two), what reason will your great-great-great-grandchildren have to buy the game? :D

That vaguely reminds me of something....
