Start again?

I want to start again, from scratch.

Now i imagine many of you are thinking 'why on earth would you do that?' And to be honest all i can say is, things have changed, i feel as if i got where i am the 'easy' way with missions and methods that are no longer available now.

I mean everything seems to be more challenging now, opponents are tougher, missions pay less and imp/fed allignment is alot stricter. I feel like if i start again i'll get more fulfillment and sense of reward from the game. i know that in a couple of years time I'll probably be thinking the exact same thing as i am now. Nonetheless ive had this desire to start afresh since i started playing again.

But my question is this, has anyone ever thought about starting afresh in elite? Jumping in that sidewinder again, just knowing that you're going to have a long adventure ahead of you? Is it even possible to start again?

If I never see Trevethick Dock again it'll be too soon.

But on a serious note - have you thought about joining a BGS oriented player group.
There's this whole layer of game around managing a large number of expansions (and the old and well established groups have a lot of expansions).
It gives a structure to your play.

Sometimes you putter about doing a bit of this or that and then other times the team has to complete like thousands of missions in a few days. Or hundreds of millions in combat bonds. It gives you a home. A place to come back to after weeks in the black. And systems that you care about and watch them grow. All while doing the same stuff you do now.

BGS Player Groups give structured meaningful long term play.

Yep. People have done it .. even dropping from Elite rankings back to zip. You'll usually hear good things about it too, seeing the game afresh, playing with more honesty as you mention, with more solid NPC's and a broader range of missions now.

Yes I have thought about it many times.
But once you do there's no way back.
I have a lot invested in my current commander and I fear I might regret it if I reboot.
I wish there was a way to try it out.

I started again from scratch, brand new save and it's the opposite, it's waaaaay too easier now.. let me explain:
last save playtime -> 2W 3Days and some hours (around 400 hours) - Credits total: around 320 millions - ranks was Dealy - Entrepreneur and Trailblazer . I was was baron in the empire and no rank in Fed
brand new save playtime -> around 4 Days (less than a hundred hours) - Credits total 180 million - rank competent - merchant - and 90% scout - I'm post-Captain soon to be rear-admiral (for the corvette) in a few hours

and believe me if I was ranking for the empire I'll be making 5X time that amount of money, but that will be tomorow after I get my vette =)

Or you can do what I did - Don't reset your save, just deliberately crash every ship in your fleet (bonus points and extra fun for finding interesting ways to do it) over and over again until all you can afford is a starter sidey. It's not the true "new player experience" but its primary departure from that is that everything that's supposed to scale up in difficulty as you progress will *still* be scaled to your true level of experience, not a new player, even though you only have the equipment and credits of a new player... You also wont have to grind ranks or engineer unlocks if you had them before (I didnt, having performed my demolition derby right after engineers dropped and never having bothered with imp or fed rank beforehand)

I've never put much thought into joining any group to be honest. I joined cannon but left because even though no one will ever say it or think it. That place can make you feel as dumb as a waffle.

Interaction would be good, objectives would give me a sense of duty i suppose. But im on xbox and.. well i just dont see other players.

They've done it? How is this possible? I mean do i contact a dev or is there a reset button somewhere?

Like another character save? That would be handy just 2 slots, but both account bound so you cant spam community missions using both to boost creds.

It would be nice. But i honestly just wanna get back in the sidewinder with no money no rank just some rookie in a shisp that he doesnt actually own.

Its easier? Really? I thought it would give more of a challenge with the boosted nocs and whatnot. I mean i think ive logged over three months on my main and not got the vette.

In terms of money making it's insanely easier than ever before, I used this forum alone to learn incredible way to make easy cash + extras (ranks or other)

I invite you to check the answers to my old thread, if that can help you decide. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/261592-Here-it-is-again-the-lust-for-clear-save

It was some time ago, my character is rich again, corrupt again, soulless again. +, as each time, I don't feel satisfied by my playthrough, the way I got to my anaconda, the surgical manner I aimed for activities following a lifeless plan to to the top. I'd like to make a story out my character, maybe keeping some RP log.

BUT, and a big but.
I know 2.3 will mess with my mind when it releases... Character creation? There's no way I would not want to start all other again if I must design my face... So no, you're not alone OP. The step is hard to make, and you will likely fall in the "I need to get everything back quick trap", which is unsatisfying at times. Work your way, don't grind your way, or you will feel like you've just lost time.

For me its nothing more than re rolling in any other game.

I've started again, twice. Both other commanders had less than 100 million in the bank so were poor. but both had many hours behind them.
I found it a lot easier each time. You know a lot more and also know how to gain credits faster.

If you dont really want to delete you can always wait for the sales and buy another account.
My 2nd account has flown from the starter system to Eravate nav beacon and onto Cleve Hub and has 60 k of credits. One hours playing max. My first ever commander must've taken a week to get that.

I would-be keen to start a second commander with a wing of other like similar fresh commanders.

Perhaps ironman only group?

You can do a "soft" restart - tie up all your cash in ships and modules, then crash a cheap ship and choose the Freewinder option from the rebuy screen. Set yourself a goal - whether money or a particular ship or something else - which you aim to reach before touching any of your stored items.

See how you enjoy that, and whether you stick with it, and you should have a good idea whether you'll enjoy the full restart.

I feel you and loce your post. For me it was more about the amount of time it took.me to get the annie. It never felt like i deserved it, selling most of my ships to obtain it (half built ships at that) and spamming the ol' smuggling missions from sothis and ceos.

I want everything i have to be earnt, the respective way, the normal way. And i agree, I'm in no rush this time around, im going to complete missions because i want to do them, because i enjoy it, not just to net me more creds so i can get a bigger ship.

Aye i suppose thats the way i look at it, just a new face to an already experienced (ish) player. Well ive done it, already ive notcied a big difference to my first playthrough. The missions seem to reward more, which surprised me. Or maybe its just been so long since ive been such a low rank.

Elite:Dangerous, show me what you got..... again :p

I did it when 2.1 launched and I enjoyed the new start. And yes, it is easier now, like Aerodark stated. Granted, "exploits" like the early rare runs or the one-mission-ranking don't exist any more (I have never used the former and the later only up to a certain rank level). But credits come easier currently - and this is not only due to the experience I have now.

Speaking of experience: This is the one thing, that will never be the same when starting anew! The sheer awe of the enormeous galaxy, the joy of learning to handle you ship, the curiosity about how the next ship you can afford will feel and perform ... all this was part of the first start and will never be the same. So don't expect too much from a restart. (For me, starting anew while playing in VR was a good experience nevertheless.)

But if you have reached all your goals, all Pilot's Federation ranks (you care about) were completed, all military ranks granted and credits lost their meaning to you due to their abundance ... yes, why not resetting your save?
But put the game away for two weeks or three, before you continue playing. Wait until your space-lust is itching again and you can't wait to mount your little sidewinder and head into the void ...

I've reset one character three times for various YouTube series. There's nothing bad about it. With advances in making money you'll be in a Cobra within a weekends play.

at the main menu the is a "clear save" option. I did it. Then I begged FD to undo the do that I did and they did you dig.

I did a CMDR reset back when 2.0 launched. I had nearly $400 million, an Anaconda, Python, and some decent rankings.

But restarting in the Sidewinder and SRV doing salvage sounded like good fun, and it was. Glad I did it, it was right for me at that point in time. And in the play time since that reset, I've crossed the galaxy twice, and earned nearly $1 billion overall. Really I lost nothing, and enjoyed a lot of good times playing.

Most important thing I learned was to embrace the small and medium ships. My second play through, my bank balance continued to grow, but I realized that I could stick with the ships I enjoyed flying most.

Have done 3 restarts and last one was when 2.0 dropped, currently sitting on quite a few billion again and considering once more to clear the save and kick off again. I enjoy the early to mid game, once you got a few billions the game becomes way to easy, fully engineered ships slaughter AI like fish in a barrel, unlocking engineers is a cake walk now, grinding faction for a few of the ships is a pita regardless and I wasn't that impressed with the Corvette or Cutter anyways.

So if you thinking about re-starting, I say go for it. With the knowledge you know now, it's much easier to get going again. Might even appreciate some of those smaller ships more this time around.... :)
