Started to get bad stutter - no idea why, used to be perfect.

In the last few days I've been getting bad stutter while in combat (PvE). Particularly doing high rate turns in a Chieftain. It can get to the point where I feel sick.

Up until a few days ago this was not the case and everything was fine. :S

I have a 1080ti with plenty of RAM etc.

I had recently updated the Nvidia driver, so I rolled that back with no effect.

I also updated the MSI afterburner app which I use to OC the card. I don't know how to roll this back though.

By using Dr Kaii to check my programmed settings vs actual I discovered that Vsync was on and was limiting FPS to 30!!! So I changed that. Although it took a few goes before it would stay set :S

The problem has not gone away and the FPS seems locked at 90 HZ (fps) even though I change it to OFF, 120 HZ etc. It always returns to 90.

So I am out of ideas. Can anyone help?

I think the first thing to do is disable the custom overclock and fan profile inside Afterburner so that it can be ruled out as a cause. Set the card to run from the default bios profile.

Second, check the Nvidia control panel and make sure your 3D settings were not hijacked by the driver install.

Third, check your VR Api compositor breakdown on the relevant platform by using an HMD rendered frametime overlay. I use fpsVR on Steam for my 5k+/Vive Pro and Oculus debug tool for the Rift.

This will enable you to see if its the GPU or CPU frametime over running and causing the loss of frames.

Fourth, is this exclusive to Elite or are you having issues with other experiences ?

If you are using Windows 10, check your update history and see if your issues coincide with the installation of KB4482887.

This update contains, among other things, a new patch for the Spectre mitigations that introduces the retpoline feature, intended to reduce the performance impact of related security fixes. However, it also causes some appreciable performance issues itself in some games. You may want to see if uninstalling this update, should you have it, improves anything.

This may sound silly, so feel free to ignore, but the last time I had grinding stutter and slowdown and even cracking in the sound, I believe the culprit was overheating in the gpu or cpu, perhaps the system was throttling performance. I checked all the fans, dusted the inside of the old beast, cleaned the cpu fan etc, whacked it all back together, works fine.

Last week's Windows 10 update KB4482887 is known for causing performance drops in various games. They've supposedly fixed it in the today's hotfix.

Gunner, I seriously recommend the use of FPSVR, this will help very much in finding out not only what are the best settings for your rig, but will graphically show you where you are having issues... For example, I was having a similar slowdown when in combat. Mine turned out to be the engine settings set to high... Change this back to low and just about all of my frame drops disappeared ! Using FPSVR I saw my frame drop as soon as an enemy hit their engines etc.. One minute I am at 90fps, next drops to 45, then once boosted away, back up to 90's. I have also used FPSVR to be able to up my texture sizes utilising more of my video memory to get better looking visually whilst setting the VR settings to Medium etc

@SimonNQ

That's interesting. I have similar issues in combat.

When you say engine settings can you clarify which graphic setting you mean please? (Sorry im not at my pc so cant check the graphics settings on elite... but i dont remember one called "engine")

Im just hoping the win10 feature update that ran into my vr pc yesterday didn't bork the performance 🤞
