starter ship

AS I recall it ,they never sold the designs just the hulls, which in later books were old but still good, as to being called puppeteers ,it was because they resembled two sock puppets to the "Pearson" person who first encountered them ,as detailed in the "Neutron star" short stories, not because of their manipulation of other species . sorry to carry on off topic ,was really hoping to find details on possible starter ships :)

How much more powerful will some of the kickstarter unlocked ships be? how will a Cobra MkIII compare to a sidewinder?

Bigger mainly which may equate to more hull strength or more hit points, can carry more stuff so could make you money faster, probably more room for bigger shield generators and weapons although you will be able to buy equipment that is better as well as just bigger.

It's probably a bit tougher in exchange for being less maneuverable mainly, I am a backer so will be able to choose one to start in and I probably will do to be honest, its really only a bit of a head start than a major advantage though.

think of it this way, I might have had more money to give me a better start in the game but i have to stop playing and go to work to earn that money, while someone else who has less money may have more free time and so be able to play more, they will soon overtake me in game by simply putting in more hours and earning money faster.

afair, the Milky way is going to collide with another galaxy in a few million years time so maybe we can prepare for that - evacuate people from systems in the line of fire - maybe that will be for Elite 5 if it is set that far into the future :)

Its actually a few billion years before the milky way collision is due to take place but wouldn't that be just spectacular if something like that was in the game. Well probably have to wait for something like Elite 20 for that to be included and sadly I dont think Mr Braben and Frontier will be around long enough to create that great scenario :D

In the alpha a Sidewinder can beat a Cobra if flown well, but the Cobra is notably tougher by a bit, maybe 25%??

The big jump up is to an Anaconda. It would take a big skill gap for a sidewinder to beat a Anaconda.

I will be starting the game with a Sidewinder and 500 credits. . . Although I can imagine a Sidewinders cargo bay is not large, not that it matters if you can buy something like a few computers straight off rather than water or veg!

I want the sense of accomplishment from starting at the bottom and working my way up but this is just my own preference. I doubt even a Founder with a Cobra and 4000c is going to be have too much of an advantage in the long run. In fact, for all we know, there might be a huge docking fee or tax to pay!

I bet you're right about the SW cargo bay and I hope to be doing 'other things' for money as well as hauling 5 tonnes of sprouts 6 light years! Sensitive correspondence, hot visual art, compromising data chips, entomological specimens . . .the list is endless (and maybe my criminal record will be).
I hope there is more than one way to turn a credit, even at the bottom. :)

I just hope for the possibility of a Saker Mk. 3 as a starter ships, at some point in Elite Dangerous. Perhaps by the time the first ships expansion pack comes out. :D

  • Imperial Eagle Mk II Fighter with upgraded weapons and shields (Imperial Bounty Hunter)
  • Basic Cobra Mk III loaded with cargo (Federal Trader)
  • Stolen but upgraded Cobra Mk III (for Pirates)
  • Basic Cobra Mk III docked at Lave (Independent Trader)
  • Long range version of the Cobra Mk III (Explorer)

I was wondering:
I have only played the original elite, so I don't know how the thing with the factions will work practically.

The "Federal trader" starting option. Does that mean that you can only trade within federal space, or how? (as opposed to "independant trader")

Ofcourse, for old times' sake, I would propably go for the Cobra starting at Lave :)

I doubt that Federal Trader means anything other than you start in a Federation system, possibly with a positive Federation reputation. It is very unlikely to be a restriction on how you play from that point onward.

Phew, that's good to hear. I would hate artificial restrictions like that :p

As far as I can remember, in "Elite 2 Frontier" starting posiotion from Lave with Cobra Mk-III and 100 credits also included a "fugitive" status in Empire and Federation (I can't remember right now how much credits should be paid for "clean" status, but I remember that the amount was significant enough).
I hope that thing will not be the same in Federal/Independent trader meaning...
