Starting as explorer?

Hey all,

Been searching the forums and cant find an answer to my question so hope you can help.

I knew about the kickstarter campaign last year but due to work and other r/l stuff never got round to pledgeing and its to late now. Im considering the premium beta signup but was unclear what I get apart from early access now.

I basically would want to start in final release as an explorer in the long range cobra , is this only available to kickstarter people who pledged the right amount?

Im guessing securing commander names is not included in premium beta also as well as a boxed edition?

As far as I know, all Kickstarter rewards are no longer available. Unfortunately you've missed the boat mate.

First welcome to the forum.
You can request a CMDR name anytime using an app if you are beta testing.
As for the other things they are just KS offers.

As part of the premium beta you get 1st stage beta access. All future expansion packs are included for the lifetime of the game. A downloadable copy of the final release version of the game. There is a thread at the top of the forum for changing your commander name instead of being backer 1234 or whatever so have a look at that thread and you should be able to select your preferred commander name as long as nobody has beaten you to it.

As for a long range Cobra I think that was only available at the kickstarter stage. When the final game is released there will be 25 ships that we will be able to pilot so while you might not get your long range Cobra I think its safe to say that you will find something that suits your needs as an explorer.

Ahh bums.

Cheers for the quick replys chaps.

Not so much the long range cobra I guess im sad about, more the option to start in a far out place. Will definitely be playing multiplayer but just wanted that option of starting a long way from the main hustle and bustle.

The way I read things there is a random element to starting; not everyone will start at Lave. You may get lucky with the dice when your initial position starts.

They've said that there will indeed be ship variations available on release, so a long range Cobra MkIII should be available to buy; just not as a starting ship for non alpha backers.

I understand why extras are given to the early birds but I don't like that those extras can't be bought later if someone wants to pay a little more for them. That applies to all relevant games on Kickstarter, not just this one. There have been a couple of games that I missed the boat on and asked them if I could still get the extras if I were to pledge more. They refused. *boggle*

It wasn't until I pledged toward Star Citizen months ago that I heard there's going to be another Elite. Haven't seen much here in the U.S. about it, sadly. Made it just before the deadline to get everything I wanted and I consider it to be money well spent, so far. Not a big fan of Kickstarter exclusives, in any case.

There are usually exclusive rewards to encourage backers when projects are still at a far more risky stage, less people would go for them if they knew they could wait until project was more secure and get the same rewards.

If you want the early backer rewards, browse the games on Kickstarter and pick one you like the look of.

Honestly, I didn't even hear about Kickstarter until the end of last year. Makes me wonder what other relatively obscure games I've missed out on. Not allowing someone to pay extra for getting the same things as earlier pledgers doesn't make sense, though. The pledgers get offended and say things like "Well, if you love <whateveritis> here then you should have pledged sooner. I got extras and youuuu didn't. Haha!"

If THEY love whatever it is then they shouldn't have a problem with someone paying more than they paid for the same thing. Paying less for the same things doesn't make them feel special enough.

AFAIK the "long range Cobra Mk III" is not a special ship only available via the kickstarter, but a normal Cobra Mk III with mods which can be added by any pilot given the time and access to the mods via regular gameplay - I'd guess this might take 10+ hours of gameplay and someluck. The devs seem to be doing their best to avoid P2W.

As for exploring, you might randomly start up near the rim anyway. Even if you began right in the middle of inhabited space it's probably less than 20 jumps to the rim in any direction.

If exploring is your interest and you want company, check out TFGE (link below).

Not quite. At the kickstarter time there was significant risk - a backer may end up with no game (and if FD did its best endeavour, then no recompense), or a Duke Nukem Forever of a final product. To say "thanks" for that risk, and to attract backers, extras were offered.

After the kickstarter there was a further year(?) in which you could still pledge and gain the kickstarter rewards, but it was all on a bit of hope the game would be any good.

Now you are backing with a pretty good idea of the final game, and also a pretty high certainty it will be made and finished. Less risk, therefore a lower reward.

I think you will appreciate your Cobra more when you buy it with credits you've earned from running missions or trading in the game itself.

I have no doubt you'll be able to equip a Cobra for exploring without getting the Kickstarter reward. The exploring load outs will be equipment like any other sort of load out.

TBH I have mixed feelings about taking an equipped Cobra even though I can, with it being a powerful ship. I kinda liked the Frontier start with very little.

Does it come in pink?

No they wont, FD say you will have to buy specific explorer variants of ships, the long range fuel tanks are built into the hull and can't be added later, it's possile the self repair equipment is the same although I've not seen that confirmed yet.

It's not about feeling special, it's about risking real money on a project that may not even get started let alone finished, like pretty much anything these days, if you get in early enough you get more out but you take more risk.

As i said, go trawl Kickstarter and take some risks with your money and then see how you view it.

Well that your and my problem. Me Dutch no creditcard or paypal. So no pledge.

But frontier problem was to reach there kickstarter funding. And with exclusives they made it happen. To atrack pledger. These early pledger made it happen to start full production.

So In my opinion as non backer those pledger deserve those exclusives.

I don't ever shop internatinal. And I use ideal in the netherlands.

If they went for steam and early acces. Which supports ideal I would play it already.
I don't care much about little indie games. But this is big indigame rivaling and in the scope of retail games normaly are.

So unfortunate for us.

So I wonder does Frontier shop support prepaid CC or must it be full blown CC like Visa.

Because if ED is released I still got this problem.

Might just do that fella, cheers.

Like the idea of the exploration, with maybe a small dose of pvp. Started playing eve when it was first released in 2003 , still have my main character wizard in it but haven't played for a few years as it got to polluted with stuff to do and less fun. Miss the days of hunting in 0.0 on my lonesome causing havoc but the exploration in this game looks awesome.
