Starting eplorationg

I've been exploring for the past few days and I'm about 350ly away from SOL.

So far I have only found few small planets, that I've discovered first. Other than that it seems that people just blaze through the systems to get credit for a first discovery.

My question is, is it more useful to just try to get the first discovery? Do you get more credits to just try to get first discovery than to surface scan each planet.

I've been scanning every planet, but I'm wondering that should I just focus on first discovery?

On a side note, I think the first discovery credit should be given to the pilot who surface scans the planet first. I mean it's more useful information than information that yeah there's a planet, no idea what kind.

If I recall, discovery credit is given to the pilot who first sells the data of a surface scan of a body. You get an extra 50% for the discovery.

So Firstly, real exploring starts round 1,000ly from Sol, - You are on your own
First discovery only goes to those that scan the planet/star
If you are the first to cash in that discovery you get a 50% Bonus

The first discovery is available for all objects, not just the star. People blazing through are probably end route to somewhere else. However, even when I am exploring, rather than scanning every object, I only scan those where the time taken to do the scan makes it worthwhile. Which rules out most moons, and many distant objects.

When I went out exploring, I would skip small icy planets they are generally only worth 200 credits or so to discover them, and I dont really need my name on them.

I ventured out about 600 LY from the edge of civilized space and found a lot of unexplored territory. It was certainly a ton of fun.

If you want to get your name on things then focus on first discovery, the 50% bonus credits certainly are nice, and having your name on celestial bodies is fun.

I found personally that it really depended on the system if i would scan the planets or not. If there was nothing but small ice planets out there then I probably wouldn't bother. Metal rich, water, gas giants, earth like etc these are the bodies you want to find.

The systems I have been so far show no system map, so I have been surface scanning each planet in the belief that I can get credits this way? Have I wasted my time with this? I though that I'm the first surface scanning the planet, if no system map is shown?

However, most of the planets have shown that it has been discovered by someone else before me. Just no details on the planet itself.

You'll still get paid the going rate for those items you have scanned, you just won't get the 50% discovery bonus or have your name on them.

You are still in the human 'bubble' you need to go further to get away from pre-owned systems - You still get the credits though, but no tag or 50% bonus

Hmmm...I've been thinking of being far out there, as I haven't seen stations in the past day. I'm at sector COL 285 Sector LP-3 c12-5.

There are no stations there.

When I did my exploration run (after reading Nutter's guide - worth the time as it is full of good tips) I didn't bother surface scanning till about 2000 ly out but I wasn't looking for planets but specifically for rare star types. Use the area you are in now to learn the best ways for you to both find what you are searching for and do it safely as once you get out into deep space there is no help if you have one too many fueling accidents.
