Newcomer / Intro Starting Game is not what I have seen in the many videos on YouTube

Excuse me if this sounds like a rant and/or if these topics were covered in one of the thousands of posts already create. I want to know about the release not the beta. I'm new and bought the game after watching several videos and reading several posts on gaming sites. My complaint? It doesn't seem like the same game. By that I mean they seem to have changed the starting difficulty for the worse. I understand there is a harsh learning curve here. No problem. I am actually enjoying that. Other changes they seem to have made since beta not so much.

First thing you have to do after learning the basic gameplay is figure out how to make credits. I've seen video after video of bulletin board missions and they have lots of choices. I've got zero options at most docks I go to, zero? Most docks have nothing displayed at all on the bulletin. Really? Second, I know I have to increase the cargo hold so I can take some missions. I've seen videos where players were able to sell off something from their starter ship to get credits and then add cargo size. I can't sell anything, really? Zero credits for everything I can sell off? And now I'm Wanted? What did I do? All I've done was fly a few missions that barely made me anything and didn't even cover the cost of damages taken from pirate attacks. Did they increase the starting difficulty after beta?

Any help which can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

Most of the stuff is covered elsewhere.

If you like a bit of a zap with your lasers (and who doesn't) then make sure that you only shoot people who are wanted. Not innocents. Target them and wait for the scan to tell you.

You don't say where you are - which doesn't help.

But I made my first bit of money, by flying around - you will find unexplored systems which will earn you money if you get 20 ly away. You should also find some very easy delivery missions - these are good for a bit of money - you can make a thousand or so in one go if you are lucky. Also be on the look out for an easy in-system run - where I started I took beer from Dalton Gateway to the more industrial platforms in that system (cannot remember their names). That gained me about 90 per ton per trip.

Once I had made enough I bought a better FSD which allowed me to jump out of the smallish network of systems I was in (a stock Sidewinder couldn't). That let me start making bigger money and improving my ship more as I found systems with more lucrative goods and missions.

Spend a bit of time screwing up like you are now. Wipe your save and start fresh with what you know. My friend ended up with a 75k fine in his first 2 hours. I told him to go nuts fighting stuff and try to live as illegally as possible to test the grounds then wipe the save.
After doing just that, he was on a fresh start and made his first 50k in an hour playing as a smuggler fresh out of a new save; this totally blew my mind as I have barely touched on the illegal stuff. He is now ripping around in his upgrade eagle; bounty hunting and smuggling.
Don't worry about the difficulty, unfortunately I am finding it far too easy now. I wish the game could be a bit harder but stuff keeps getting padded up with the safety foam as [rant - redacted]

One major piece of advice I can give you correlates with andyl's post above:
Keep a close eye on what is wanted and who works for who. There are factions as the major entities such as Federation and Empire, but then there are subfactions within each system. These can be political parties, corporations, gangs, religious groups, rebels( opposing political party). Stations are owned by of these subfactions and they will shift in power over the system.
Keeping this in mind, the definition of 'wanted' can shift. Not all wanted people are criminals throughout the galaxy. If they are wanted locally then it is much easier to kill them and get by. The local security force will recognize the attack, the party in power will be in support of the local security and you; but the local gang or other party that the alleged criminal is involved with will like you less.
The federation is exceptionally sticky, as they tend to poke at independent system's affairs, and pay you to kill pirates that may be aligned to an important faction in a system.
It can be very complex, keep an eye out and learn your local parties, choose loyalties wisely and either stick to them or work hard at maintaining neutrality...but remember that loyalty pays best.

Thanks for the pointers. I started trying a bunch of crazy stuff just like your friend. Had a pretty good time. To wipe the save do I just erase it from my hard disc? I found the farther out I went the better the jobs were and the illegal (smuggling) runs are best to get some quick cash. Still have so many questions. I was pulled out of hyperdrive by a clean player who began attacking me instantly. I was not wanted in that sector. I'm assuming if you kill another player you just have to pay off the fine? Also are the player killers automatically reported or do I have to report them to the authorities to make them wanted?

They automatically get a fine if you are not wanted and they attack you in a system with a government.

But here's the catch: not all systems have a government.
So called Anarchy systems have no governing authority, so it's basically a free-for-all.

You can see this in the galaxy map, the big alliances each have their own color, and some systems have an independent government. If a system is a grey dot, it means its anarchy and you may end up getting shot on sight.

Just a quick followup - players are CMDR someone, NPCs don't have the CMDR. Some NPCs (the pirates) do pull you out of hyperspace and attack - some you can deal with, but some have too big an arsenal (beam lasers, missiles etc) that a starting player has no chance. I have been playing a week and haven't had players attack me - one did interdict (pull me out of hyperspace) me but apologised as he had got the wrong ship.

No in Options you have 'CLEAR SAVE', that resets your progress

Have fun and any question/doubt, fire away!

Thanks again to all. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas. Nice to see a community that is helpful and easy going... even though I barely searched the forums which tends to irritate constant users and/or some members. Hehe...
Found the start is very randomized. I cleared my game and was given three smuggler missions straight away. One gave me a fine when I abandoned it even though I didn't commit the crime? Love the game more than I hate the few minor irritations. Playing with a controller but thinking about two sticks.

Hello Paranoid Jack,

When I start a new game I always start with exploration.
But you can try to make some delivery mission (sell your shields & weapons to make long range jump, it will unlock missions)
Exploration is actually a good way to start making credits.
And you don't need to buy something to do it since your first sidewinder already have a D-Scan.
Maybe you can buy a fuel scoop since it save time.
.
Try to explore systems, try to discover planets, get close as possible (5 or 10 sl), target it and wait for the analyze.
To sell your data, go to an another far system, dock to any station and sell it with the cartographics menu.
I made easily 60 to 70k credits this way.
.
Feel free to sell your shield & weapons at start to make biggest jump.
.
Try to join the SOL system while doing your exploration, just to see our beautiful earth & moon.
.
Now I'm on a super-equipped Eagle and I'm a Bounty hunter roaming on Mineral extraction point. I can make 50K$ really fast by taking down some wanted cobra.
I also unlocked some cool mission since I have a better ship.
Next step will be mining or trade and participate to the galaxy events (check the galnet for this ^^)
.
Fly safe commander ! And keep trying :)

Bulletin Board Missions are randomized, so it can take some time to get going. If you check out my YouTube channel I did two Gamma previews the last two-days before full release. On both days I started with the stock Sidewinder and like 100 credits. The first time was rough, it took me a while to find some work at first. The second start was much quicker.

For reference, here are the two videos:

Even though I had more money, this start took longer:

This start is the typical newbie start, and I was able to get going right away:

Getting started is a bit of a crap shoot, you have to fly around.
