Newcomer / Intro Starting is Rough

Just picked up the game and getting started is really rough when you only have an hour or two to play every couple days. My Starting place Is LHS 3447. Im really needing some advice on what to do to even satart making decent credits. Ive done a few small missions from the bulletin board and have like 4k which of course is the same as nothing. Also of course in the started sidewinder. Can some one give me some real advice on what to start on so I can get out of this ship and into something that I can work with?

we all started the same..a dingy sidewinder and some popgun lasers..but there are many avenues to success..just play to your strengths.use the little cargo space to run some minor cargo runs and slowly increase your earnings...keep an eye on the bulletin board and grab any missions..or...

Team up with a established CMDR and have them take you to a res area and earn you some quick money and some safer combat training..thats what i have done with my friends...they tag my target once, run away..and I kill it..and they get half the earnings.

but dont be in a huge rush..nothing is going anywhere...besides..you can just go around discovering things with your discovery sensors and turn that in at the cartographic office in any space port ( that is at least 20LY from the discovery).
good luck and enjoy.

Yep, starting is rough. Just like life really.

When I first started I made my fortune by smuggling but I hear bounty hunting is quite profitable since the updates. Why not take your Sidewinder out for a spin at a nav beacon and pick on some easy targets?

Try and do multiple missions at once. E.g delivery to A and a fetch from B. Drop off at A, you might get another deliver to B. Do the fetch from B, and you could have done 2 or maybe 4 missions on just 3 jumps, and maybe carried a bit of your own cargo.

RES bounty farming is far and away the fastest way to make credits. You can do it with your Sidewinder if you play smart and only engage after NPC's open fire on wanted ships. After you've accumulated around a mil....you can get into a Viper (I'd skip the Eagle) and with it and some upgrades (A3-PP, PD, Shields and booster) you hang hang in there and swap lead with the Pythons and Condas for some bigger money. Just scoot out 3km when you're shields are on the last ring and divert power to Sys and get back in the fight when shields are back to full charge.

Also I'm sending you a PM on a related topic.

First bit of advice is get away from LHS 3447, it's not that great for anything.
Bulletin boards can be a good earner at the early stage, you can stack missions, so for example you might get a couple of courier missions and a cargo hauling mission to the same station. just make sure you can complete them.
Get to know where you can find things as bulletin board missions to source goods tend to pay better than others.
If you can find yourself a nice outpost station with a blackmarket (check the contacts) you can earn good money doing illegal salvage. Just cruise slowly (30km/s) in frameshift and look for weak signal sources. Drop into those and you should find some canisters that you can scoop up and sell at the blackmarket. there are also bulletin board missions based on that which are even more lucrative.

I would second finding some combat for some quick cash. I spent the first 4 hours or so trading as I didn't want to die but only acheived about 30,000CR.

There is no cost really to dying in your sidewinder. You can easily make a few 100,000 CR an hour if you go to RES and Nav beacons and wait for the system authorities to take down an anaconda most of the way for you to finish it with them. You only have to be the last human to hit the ship to get the reward. If the authorities finish the ship, you still get the credits.

Every time I find some sort of ongoing combat or pirate location I seem to get targeted by multiple ships at once and even with full enginer power, boosting, and spinning they never seem to miss. I can't get away and end up spaced...

Are you sure you're not labeled as "Wanted" down in the right corner? if so you want to go and pay off your fine whitch is the reason you're wanted then...
Also spinning doesn't and changing direction doesn't help you much evading fire when you are +1 km away from whoever is shooting at you especielly not if they use gimballed weapons...
They best defence is proberly to buy some chaff's and launch them right before you deside to Boost away... That way their gimballed/turreted weapon wont be able to lock on to your ship for approximately 20 sec....

RES bounty farming is far and away the fastest way to make credits.

Rare trading is probably higher, even in a Sidewinder or Adder, but RES farming is definitely good.

Just scoot out 3km when you're shields are on the last ring and divert power to Sys and get back in the fight when shields are back to full charge.

You actually want to divert power to SYS when you're actively taking damage. The number of pips in sys does nothing to regenerate your shields faster, except in that you need enough pips to keep the SYS capacitor from hitting empty. As long as your SYS capacitor isn't empty, the rate of shield repair is constant for any given shield. For example, on my ship, 2 pips is sufficient to return energy faster to the capacitor than the shields drain while recharging, and 2 pips or 4 pips will recharge equally fast.

The main advantage to more pips in SYS is that while you have the pips there, each hit deals less damage to your shields, by a very large factor.

I started off just exploring until I had enough credits to buy and outfit an eagle. Then I did some bounty hunting at RES points. If you go to a RES, you can get some help taking out aquisitions from the local authorities, and still collect the bounties for them. If you go the exploring route, you might also want to load your cargo hold with goods and do some trading while you're at it.

I hope this helps.

I started off doing boring missions, then bought an adder and a fuel scoop and went all the way up to the coal sack exploring. I got a few new discoveries up there on my first run out, with the basic scanner.

I then came back and hunted at a RES point (get a scanner, don't attack until they do, and let the police take their shields down. You hit the hull), which earned me enough money to grab a Cobra and an advanced scanner.

I'm still doing exploration runs now, getting further and further afield. I've just got an A4 drive for my Cobra, which will be fun.

Wow guys you have all been really helpful. I ended up running into another player while i was just floating surfing the forums and He had a viper so after a few minutes of talking we decided to wing it over to some nav points and do bounties. withing 2 hours of this i had over 300k. So yeah thanks and wow. Getting somewhere now even in a sidewinder.

Unless you go exploring, ditch the basic discovery scanner and put another 2T cargo bay in.

Gives you more possible missions, and of course more space if you to a bit of trading
