The system I got to start in looks pretty decent. It has a few Asteroids that I would love to give a try with, but I can't seem to find any tools for mining. Can someone assist me and - if possible - give me some pointers on how to make money here? EVE Online (the only thing I can think of that has a complexity like ED) at least lets you start with a miner and a gun. ED offers just guns..

Newcomer / Intro Starting: Mining Profession

Buy a mining laser and a refinery. You may want to look for someplace that has pristine metal-rich rings or asteroid belts. Other than that, knock chunks off with your mining laser and scoop with your cargo scoop. Bigger refineries have more bins and can process more types of ore in parallel.
Surly_Badger is correct. I personally prefer rings - higher density of asteroids. Unfortunately, those do seem to have also high density of pirates. You are likely to get in a few tussles. You will, optimally, want a 4-bin refinery. The best metals you can mine is platinum, palladium and gold. You really do not want to vent any of those because you are out of available bins. The fourth one can be kept for silver or minerals. Better mining laser will cut the rock faster.
