Starting my first exploration trip

I just started my first exploration trip, from the bubble to Colonia. I'm doing it in the beta with a Beluga that has 30 ly jump range and I have a couple of questions:

1. I know that the most valuable discoveries are Earth-likes and terra formable. Now, when I jump into a system, is there a quick way to tell whether I can find one of those planets? Has someone put out maybe a chart showing the picture of a planet that you select in the nav panel to differentiate among each others? I can tell whether the selected planet is rocky or high metal content (and of course a star), but, besides those, I'm not sure if I should expect a different picture for different planet types.

2. I know there were a lot of discussion about how to plot long range routes, specially in 2.1 that can take a bit of time to do it. However, with 2.2, that seems to be over. Of course, I'm still limited to 1000 ly routes max. Is there a trick when you want to plot a route to a distant destination like Colonia? So far, I've been using my starting point and then align it perfectly with my destination. Then, I start moving forward in the galaxy map until I find a system that is a bit below 1000 ly and select it for my intermediary destination. I also bookmark it in the hope I'll be able to use it when I come back. But is there a better way to plot those long trips?

Thanks in advance for any pointer or info!

After a while you get to see which planets are which in the system map, even those sneaky ammonia worlds that look like ice planets but the best way to be sure is to zoom in in the system map, select a planet and listen to it. They all have different sounds. Earth like worlds sort of increase slowly in volume and then you hear a bird chirping or whale singing. Water worlds have a bubble sound going on underneath the music that plays and ammonia worlds, well I never really got that sound but they are easy to spot when you zoom in. You can see their continents even through a heavy atmosphere.

Awesome! I didn't know you could get sounds from the system map!

Thanks!

If you want to have a go at using the system map sounds then check out this thread.

I will check it, thanks!

Also remember that anything you do in beta does NOT translate into the main game, so first discovered tags and such will not carry over into the main game. Another way to look at it, is any journey you take in beta will only be a practice run for what you may want to do in the live game.

Yeah, I know that the beta can be yanked at any time and all is lost. I was just kinda trying to get my feet wet. If there was anything wrong or I didn't like it, it wouldn't be a big deal. I'm also participating in PowerPlay in the current version so having the beta allowed me to try a long trip while being able to maintain my rank in PowerPlay. I think I like it and will likely get out with a few passenger missions when the final 2.2 is released.

Thanks all!
