Newcomer / Intro Starting out, BH, Rare and Commodity Trading

Now that we have the Adder in the game I was considering moving up from Sidewinder to Adder (for exploration, trading and some light bounty hunting) and then on to a Cobra.

Anyone got any advice on whether to go for the Adder or save up further and grab a Viper on the way to the Cobra?

I have an ADDER and a COBRA.
The ADDER is a good ship to have before the COBRA. With D class systems and no weapons you can haul 14t with a jump distance of 20ly.
The Zaonce -> Witchhaul rare trip can be done very quickly an nets me around 300'000 creds.
If you kit out the ADDER with good quality weapons, shields, power gen, distributer and mill armour you can bounty hunt with it.
It's fast and can out boost bigger enemies. I've killed an Anaconda (ai) and many Cobras (again ai).

The COBRA can haul 40 tons for 15 LY (so far, I'm not up to A class systems yet) but it is expensive.
Both are good ships.

Question: I have rares on board but am considering changing to a larger craft whilst on a round-about route. What happens to any cargo? can it be transferred? must it be offloaded before sale/purchase? Anyone experienced this?

, well into a rares round robin and had to stop off on route to refuel (must get round to scooping sometime!) Docked at Station in Mortel system and had instruction to go to landing pad. However, hovering near the pad, I get a tresspass message (and fine) and was not sure if I had gone to wrong pad but there was no (blue) notification and then doubts set in - so I thought I'll go back out and apply to re-dock. Panacking slighlty at this point I pressed the wrong button on my Hotas that in some circumstances initiates a boost and you can guess the rest - ship destroyed with 20t of rares on board - estimated value in excess of 200k. Good job I have insurance - I have seen somewhere about cargo insurance but don't know how to access it

Some of the Stations supplying Rares are around 500,000+ L/Ss out from the star - Any evidence that these command a greater price, given the time and effort to reach them?

just an additional tip , when starting out Bounty hunting if you work in a system with a government and only attack wanted ships you get protection of the system defence craft, it might not occur to a new player but it often ups the bounty by 50% to use a kill warrant scanner on craft already identified as wanting, if you dont use the KWS you only get the bounty from that systems government. if you do use the KWS you often gain additional bounties from other systems/factions to

You get a larger profit from the more initially expensive pieces. Personally I can't see the very far out stations being worthwhile purely from the time aspect. If it takes 30 minutes real time to reach a single station you could do half a multi rare run in that time. In other words, the profit from going there would have to be 500k by itself to be financial sense.
If you want to go for other reasons, that's a different story.

Adder That

Having struggled with the sidewinder I eventually decided to do some exploring to get enough money to buy an adder.

I stripped it of weapons and mods, reduced the fuel tank to 4 tons and bought a cheap fuel scoop, then headed for Lave.

It did not take long to run rares to afford a decent setup. I decided I could earn as much with 16T as with more if you just focused on that. In fact more time is spent waiting for the rares to fill your 16T than running the route.

Power - 7.2MW
Cargo - 16T
Fuel Cap - 4T
Mass - 71.8/135 Max
Jump Range Unladen - 27.64LY
Jump Range Laden - 21.48LY

Average time per run about fifteen minutes
Always seem to avoid interdiction.

Average run - 250,000 profit. That's over a million an hour, without the wait times - for rares to restock.

Hardpoints - none
Power Plant - D2
Thrusters - D3
FSD - A3
Power Dist - A2
Fuel Tank (Cap 4T) - C2
Cargo Rack (Cap 8T) - E3
Cargo Rack (Cap 8T) - E3
Fuel Scoop - B2
Docking Comp - E1 (Faster safer docking, a must have for a new player.)
Auto Field-Maint - D1 (Not really needed, but a must have if you don't want to go to station to repair, which is a risk)

I don't think bang for buck it can be bettered. And if it blows, it's 38,220 CR to refit as is.
You need to shut off the extra unused modules like cargo hatch and reassign priorities to get better performance on power.

It's very high risk, as you arrive in a system with not enough fuel to make the next long jump to, and it's one of those stars you can't fuel scoop from. Added to that you don't have a scanner and you don't know where the local stations are. LOL. But you can jump to a local star, but you hope it's not another dud star with no place to go. Seat of you pants flying. Great fun! I'm seriously impressed with the adder.

I got bored grinding and I'll make a few rare runs to get a well kitted Cobra. Made 130k profit on the first run from Xeho + a lot from exploring. Wonder how long I can make different runs until I run out of rare exports. I really don't want to keep running the same route over and over again.

Love the Hauler so far.

My Adder before tweak:

Power - 7.2MW
Cargo - 16T
Fuel Cap - 4T
Mass - 71.8/135 Max
Jump Range Unladen - 27.64LY
Jump Range Laden - 21.48LY

Tweaked it as far as I can go for what I have.
Mass 68.0/135 Max
Jump Range Unladen - 29.66LY
Jump Range Laden - 22.68LY

7 Jumps for from LEESTI to FUJIN now.
