Starting out into the Black

Hi all,

after recently returning from an extended break (Left just before horizons landed - pardon the pun) I decided to take a serious look at exploration.

I've read the Epic tales of Eramus and read the mission reports from the various expeditions, so I thought I'd give it a try myself.

Before i left for my break, I had a Clipper and a 60+ million creds in the bank, so upon return I sold the ship and picked up a trader Python.

Spent a week relearning the ropes and run fed missions at the fashionable to be seen in locations.

As exploration was a field i was seriously interested in I purchased an Anaconda and proceeded to kit her out to head into the (hopefully) unknown.

Anaconda Build

I specced this initially as a homage to the Fuel rats, figuring that as I'm only taking a short trip around the stars the extra space on board might come in useful to help somebody when i'm out there.

Returning to the game is quite a new learning curve with all the Horizons stuff (especially engineers) so before heading off on my voyage I thought id give a test run to Maia to pickup the Alloys for Felicity to mod my drives.

TOlylu.jpg

my god the python seemed big at first, but getting behind the controls of this really gives you that epic ship feeling... i'd watched videos of Anacondas using the mailslot, but the first couple of times you do it yourself its a bit scary...

the journey to Maia was uneventful - apart from the planetary landing part... how could i forget to research that... :(

after a couple of attempts i'd mastered the orbital cruise and glide parts, so i wasn't arriving hundreds of Km from the destination.

OJKh4S.jpg

picked up the 1t of cargo required and headed off to Farseer Inc..

arrived at the system.. no sign of the base, so docked at the station (chance to test the mailshot delivery skills)

found the planet details after googling them.. so had to scan the planet to get the base to show (rather than the loads of unknowns on my navigation panel)

tE2UpC.jpg

quick test of my debug camera skills when leaving the station.

Found Felicity's base with no dramas and made quite a good landing approach (dropped out 30Km from the base). proceeded to land and start on this engineering stuff.

had enough mats to roll a level 1 FSD upgrade and a level 2 Dirty Drive Thruster upgrade.

so my conda sits a a 27ly jump range for the trip.

qbZRy9.jpg

decided on the chevron paint, as this is basically an AA truck in space...

a7VJzR.jpg

time to test the camera again..

before leaving Deciat i thought id better try the SRV, so had a quick drive around the planet and worked out how to find the rocks...

Saiu69.jpg

simple enough really - target, shoot scoop...

so quick trip back to Rays Gateway to plan the main event..

Stage 1 the Journey

I seriously considered Sag A as the maiden voyage, but then decided that it was a bit over ambitious, so decided on the Rosette Nebula instead.

looking at other routes that people had taken to this site gave me some idea of how to proceed.

my route waypoints:

(I'll update this as each point is added so it might possibly help others wishing to start out on their own expeditions)

Rays Gatweway
Betelguese (79 Jumps) (has to be the first location, just Hope Ford Prefect is home when i arrive)
Rigel (120 Jumps)
BD-12 1172 (35 Jumps)
Orion Dark Region ZE-A E6 (61 Jumps)
COL 69 Sector FB-T B5-0 (26 Jumps)
Flyooe Eohn F5-F b58-0 (80 Jumps)
HD 42401 (75 Jumps)
Pyurks UK-E C28-2 (100 Jumps)
118 NGC 2244 Sector CL-X D1-42 (118 Jumps)
Rosette Sector DL-Y E12 (88 Jumps)

HD 259012 (1 Jump)
Roster Sector CL-0 B6-0 (1 Neutron Jump 101ly)
Phroea PHIO SD-M BS4-1 (174 Jumps)
Seagull Sector BA-A D4 (119 Jumps)
ALS 299 (38 Jumps)
Outotch TM-T C17-1 (104 Jumps)
PLIO Eurl ZX-S B5-0 (54 Jumps)
Col 173 Sector 1M-M B11-0 (91 Jumps)
Vela Dark Region RC-V B2-5 (114 Jumps)
Vela Dark Region LC-V C2-29 (6 Jumps)
Deciat (176 Jumps)

I've decided to take the whole trip on economic jump mode, as a test. because if i cant hack doing a 10,000ly trip on multiple jumps then there is no hope for later on. Plus its all about the journey rather than the destination.

quite straightforward... getting into the routine:

throttle to Zero once in Hyperspace prior to arrival in system
fire off Discovery scanner upon arrival.
target star and scan (did about 30 jumps before figuring this out - doh)
while waiting for the star can check the map for planetary bodies
go scan any bodies of note, or ones that take your interest / landable for materials
scoop star (if applicable)
Supercruise to items of interest
when done when done select next system in jump
hyperspace out

repeat lots of times..

EJRUJk.jpg

its quite a nice sight when your arrival destination is close

Good luck cmdr, enjoy your trip :)

btw, your Conda is capable of a lot bigger jump ranges, you may consider optimizing your build a bit

I know its in need of some work, but this is a basic "Test Run" so the jump range is not really important

Betelgeuse to Orion Dark Region

The second leg of my journey is to head to the Black hole the other side of the Orion nebula.

First waypoint 120 jumps to Rigel.

Nothing of note on route, standard systems.

wVv0cb.jpg

Nice arty Rigel shot on arrival.

Second waypoint 90 Jumps to BD-12 1172 (spirograph Nebula)

Couple of discoveries on route

9KBZun.jpg

My first Germanium (on Wrego FH-U B160-0 3A)

And….

*** FANFARE ***

my first unsdiscovered system

nothing too exiting: a Class T Brown Dwarf with a couple of planets

oJ9IH7.jpg

ow7cBk.jpg

quite exciting when you find a virgin system, and every planet you discover and subsequently land, and drive on you’re the first person to achieve that.

Arrival at the Spirograph Nebula..

Everything has a pinkish hue

third waypoint 61 Jumps to Orion Dark Region ZE-A E6

RAhJCP.jpg

each system visited makes the cloud grow ever larger ..

upon arrival its quite spooky to see no star on arriving at the system.

5pjvtM.jpg

My first black hole. The lensing effect when you pass it is quite spooky.
Ended up getting to close and emergency stopped.. had to pop a heatsink to escape to safe distance without frying everything..

phew... lucky escape...

Next leg of the trip:

due to the forthcoming alien stuff the Witchhead Sector is mostly permit locked now, so going straight to Rosette is a nightmare.

I found it easier to tack sideways the move up, so first waypoint...

COL 69 Sector FB-T B5-0 (26 Jumps)

then use Waypoint Flyooe Eohn F5-F b58-0 (80 Jumps) heading towards the Rosette nebula.

Found some really cool mountainous planets whilst prospecting.

yR4Cb4.jpg

also found my first Unexplored Earth Like world... so couldn't resist this one... :D

next leg - pushing on to Rosette nebula.

Now i'm past the numerous permit required sectors, so its a steady straight line run to Rosette Sector

first waypoint HD 42401 (75 Jumps)

had a USS appear so thought id take a look for a bit of variety..

nothing too exiting, just some space debris and a small data cache canister...

so time to break out the fighter and have some fun..

U5WWNH.jpg

"DIE CANISTER... DIE"

dllgaW.jpg

3I3chj.jpg

half expecting "Stay on target... Stay on target" to be broadcast over the comms channel..

20 or 30 jumps later whilst playing with the external camera...

Sk5Paw.jpg

shot of Orion and the light pollution that is the centre of the Galaxy

Second waypoint Pyurks UK-E C28-2 (100 Jumps)

nothing too exiting on the planetary system front apart from

wWmhog.jpg

AaLRnN.jpg

lots of Binary systems which are quite photogenic

Third Waypoint 118 NGC 2244 Sector CL-X D1-42 (188 Jumps)

P5safZ.jpg

the rosette nebula is starting to look nice and big in the windows..

2VnK0A.jpg

Final Waypoint Rosette Sector DL-Y E12 (88 Jumps)

Arrived at the Rosette nebula and I'm now 5464Ly from my start location, so this should help later with unlocking Prof. Palin.

finish of this post with a nice shot from inside the nebula.

5qw4a0.jpg

Thinking about heading home via Seagull nebula..

to the return leg home i've decided to go via the Seagull nebula and possibly check out some alien ruins before returning back to the bubble to drop off my endeavours to Felicity.

around the Rosette nebula there are quite a few neutron starts of i thought i'd give it a try.

selected HD 259012 as my test subject

q7EyAi.jpg

supercruised into the stream following the flow until getting the "Frame Shift Charged" message

uNuQOR.jpg

WOW... 110ly jump now possible...

went to the galaxy map and picked a destination tartget.. Rosette Sector CL-0 B6-0 101ly

smooth as clockwork..

right enough fun.. back to business

Next waypoint Phroea PHIO SD-M BS4-1 (174 Jumps)

nothing of note on route

next waypoint Seagull Sector BA-A D4 (119 Jumps) the seagull nebula.

spent some serious time in here and uploaded a couple of shots of how good it looks..

after spending a couple of hours in the nebula decided to press onwards..

next waypoint ALS 299 (38 Jumps) "Thors Helmet"

MiETPb.jpg

r4l5un.jpg

NRROOz.jpg

quite a small nebula, but looks good.

next waypoint Outotch TM-T C17-1 (104 Jumps)
nothing of note on this leg

next waypoint PLIO Eurl ZX-S B5-0 (54 Jumps)

the only moment of note was being deposited out of super cruise between three stars

Of7RMj.jpg

started scooping as soon as i'd landed and the temp was rising quickly.
had to pop a heatsink and plot a safe route out before taking the screenshot.

continued onwards with my journey.. thanking the stars i'd packed heat sinks...

next waypoint Col 173 Sector 1M-M B11-0 (91 Jumps)

only saw 2 tagged systems the whole leg and found another ELW..

next leg of the journey..

time to checkout some alien ruins..

waypoint set to Vela Dark Region RC-V B2-5 (114 Jumps)

FFmC25.jpg

nice how they now make it easy for you to find them... :D
I have great respect for the guys that were hunting these things initially

rrcRi0.jpg

nice overhead shot of the site.

WvHTsA.jpg

the scanner is going crazy with all of the objects... loads of signal types iv'e never heard before...

9Yfg1N.jpg

K4ICnp.jpg

nice shiny alien treasures to sell later....

IjTypc.jpg

loads of obelisks and it turns out you can scan them...

RMp7y8.jpg

found out later that these are useless unless decoded, but hey it felt good seeing this stuff for the first time..

oJnizi.jpg

even worked out (by trial and error) that you could shoot the relic and collect it...

due to the low gravity on the planet i had some fun with canyon jumping between sections of the ruins

3i8Qri.jpg

wish i could say that all of the jumps were 100% successful, but it was very enjoyable... some real Armageddon moments

right.. time to leave the alien playground and continue onwards to my next destination Vela Dark Region LC-V C2-29 (6 Jumps)
this is a dark nebula, so i thought i'd take a couple of shots whist inside.

ybWFZe.jpg

vpRtYz.jpg

whist you could still see some stars there weren't as many visible than the previous system.

so time to swing homewards..

Deciat (176 Jumps)

enroute back to the bubble i stopped off at a planet for some prospecting and found some bonus loot..

YNgJtF.jpg

UpBvKt.jpg

a dead SRV with loads of minerals and parts to pickup... as my SRV only holds 2t i have to make multiple trips back to the ship to offload the treasure..
12t (various items) in total and 3-4 materials.

pressing on home....

YqdiGx.jpg

it would be a shame to stuff it up now... so extra care required when Landing.

managed to land without any dramas and proceeded to sell off all of the gathered data.

Cbyh4Q.jpg

loads of first discoveries...

total systems visited on trip 1,659

total cr 16.5m

1.5 ranks in Exploration as well.

Full level 5 access with Felicty....

overall a highly enjoyable trip, well worth a try if you've never tried it before..

thinking about the next trip now... possibly Sag A* via Colonia, and seeing how i feel when up there, possibly onto Beagle Point..

/MISSION LOG ENDS
