Newcomer / Intro starting out... penniless...

So I racked up about 23k so far and finding the grind for more credits somewhat daunting...

Best way to use my credits to make more credits?

Trading is the quickest way to make money. Larger cargo bay. Look for decent delivery or fetch missions.
You might also ask any friendly traders if you can ride with them as escort. You'll get 5% of their profits.

I've just headed back into the black but there are usually a few decent pilots willing to help out a new player. Hopefully one will post here shortly...

Escorting Friendly traders... how does that work?

Most my earnings have come from missions.

Trading... seems like a lot of work here to make the right score.
I think I have to download some tools for track best supply / demand ?
I'll look into that... And upgrading my cargo bays...

More feedback is appreciate :)

Keeping a check on what stations want will help when you trade for sure, you can always make a few extra credits.
You would need to be in a wing, that's joining up with another commander.
Where are you based? Maybe someone might be in your area?
Add me as a friend in game, same name Cula-ta and I will see if I can help you. Won't be until tomorrow though. I'm on UK time

Rep/ faction mission are in fact the best way to start out also if you drop the basic scanner and add the +2 cargo as it will give you 6 slots that unlocks better paid missions right off , once you've got a bit more money you can then chose between BH / combat or trading also if your doing so trading don't forget that inter system trading is a very fast way of making quick cash

If you can get a pilot to give you a hand and I will if nobody else offers you'll be flying in no time.
It may just take me a while to get back into populated space.

Credits will come slow at first. I find your earning potential is directly bound to your ship. In a Widesinder theres only so much you can do. I did missions and bounty hunting in the USS near big starports - If you get in over your head, you only need to hang on till the cops come to help. Once you get enough to upgrade your ship you should. I held on till I got an Adder, which is strong enough to do bounty hunting without much worry, and has enough cargo room to start doing some light trading and is also very good for rares trading, where i made a good deal of money. Once you get to a Cobra, bigger doors will open and the money will come in faster.

To start out do a few random missions (ignore kill missions) to make some credits and get used to the basic game mechanics (supercruise, jumping to systems and galaxy map).

Since you've only make 23k and you're just starting out now is the perfect time to die. I'd find a resource extraction site (in the rings of a planet) or a nav becaon and find wanted ships and kill them. If you die it does't matter too much at this stage. It will teach you how to fight and how to fly. If you're ever in doubt then run. Learning how and when to run is the most underrated skill in this game. It's pretty much impossible to die to hostile interdictions in the later game if you know how and when to run.

Trading is one of the best ways to make money (the best in the high end ships) but until you can afford to buy cargo and have a ship big enough to make a profit and to know how to run to stop you losing your cargo you're better off using your time in a sidewinder learning how to fight, run and die.

Dealing with death is another important skill to learn in the game. A lot of us had a head start from beta and gamma knowing our progress was going to be wiped out so we learned the skills necessary to survive when dying didn't matter. Now I can smash my anaconda in to a wall with a full hold of palladium and laugh about it where as if I had played from the start and hadn't learned valuable lessons about the insurance system I wouldn't have taken such mistakes as well :)

This is sound advice.

I am sorry, but I just have to say: never mind I have the insurance, never mind I have enough to cover it an infinite number of times; if I smash an Anaconda or a Python into a wall and hear the "eject eject eject".. I am not going to laugh: I am going to sob...

Not reading what anyone said in this thread, but the best thing you can do is take your sidewinder to a Nav Beacon, or RES.

Seeing you're newish, RES (Resource Extraction Site) can be found at any planet with rings around them. You fly close to the rings on a planet and you'll see them start popping up.

Just scan thing, look for lazer shows, and assist security teams in taking down big targets. If you're lucky, you'll see 3-4 people beating on a wanted Anaconda and that will get you 100-300k.

Later on trading starts to become very profitable, but it's so boring it will make you quit the game pretty quick. You can start trading early with a hauler, but you might want to stick to rare item trade routes for best results until you get a Type 6 at least.

One your ship gets outfitted a bit better (you can use a sidewinder) you can go to conflict zones and pick a faction (under functions on your right side screen) and gear battle bonds there.

If you want to mine, you could bounty hunt until you can get a miner going, but... I would wait till next patch personally for that one.

Remember that your bounty is tied to your ship, so know when to run from a fight. All sorts of things can go wrong once your hull starts taking hits and they start targeting your subsystems.

Buy a fuel scoop. Filters your planets in the Galaxy map by K G B F O A M type stars, and never worry about getting stranded in space.

thx all - about banked about 40k now... about that ship purchase... i hear a lot of folk going to an Eagle 1st.
If one does that, do they take a big hit on resale, to then upgrade to an Adder?

Also remember, no matter how frustrating it can seem when starting out - we all were at the point once upon a time.

hoping I get past that soon... the game plus the Saitek X55 , a big investment for me so again hoping I can get into a groove here..

Thanks all for valuable input here!

Btw, can you specify coords in an XYZ'ish fashion? Otherwise, I'm currently in POTRITI...

The best part was managing to boost in to the station I had just left :p

Don't be in a rush to go through different ships. You can spent about a million credits on a combat Sidewinder :

This will teach you the basics about weapon and power management and If you're good you should be able to take out an npc Python.

id recommend combat and trading. u can make so much money bounty hunting i am a few ays old in this game and now i have a cobra. mainly from bounty hunting.

also if u can find someone ncie to wing with who has a bigger ship than u they can take u on trade runs and u get money for the stuff they trade. a friend did this for me nettng me like 25k credits each run.

also try nav sites or res sites for combat.

haha - so i made 2 mistakes recently but , i'm ok.

I took a mission that I found I could not reach the destination, so i cancelled it. As I'm leaving the dock I see i have illicit cargo (from the mission i scrubbed) , and not thinking (cuz i did read NOT to elsewhere) i dumped it too close to the station. Cha ching - fined.

Next mistake - I watched vids were peeps would had to nav and open fire on units who were in combat, so i figured i'd try.
Found two in a dog fight and assumed one or the other was 'wanted' so i opened up on him - wrong move.
So i figured, if he isn't the bounty, the other is, so i opened up on him - wrong move.
I was able to make it to a station and pay for my crimes.
btw, did try to pick a faction where i arrived at nav, but there wasnt an option to pick one (NONE only).

Anyway, still sitting @ 40k.

Tried to sell my sensor to buy more cargo space, but could not - no option to sell.
Was it the discovery sensor I should ditch?
Suppose that makes sense - can't really jump so far out enough to collect on the intel i find.
