Newcomer / Intro Starting Point

So, this may be a silly question, but does everyone start in the same point in space? I'm reading a lot of reccomendations for trade runs to start with, and I'm so far from these systems that even using third party route plotters, I cannot find a way there.

No. You are assigned one, and some players have optional starts based on KS backing. Plenty of trade routes all around, you'll discover your own soon enough if you're starting far from these 'recommended' ones. Dont forget CMDR, pirates also know of these lucrative runs advertised here...

Your starting location tends to vary unless you happen to be a KS Backer.

Should you wish to "change" your starting location you can wipe your save via the options menu, and you may end up in yet another system.

As for the trading runs that get advertised here, DJ007 is right to warn you that they are well know to Pirates, but I strongly suggest looking at local markets inside starting systems, as people tend to overlook some easy starting profitable trading between stations within systems. Thus allowing you to amass some easy credits before upgrading your ship.

As for finding yourself too far from other systems, a few things to be aware of:

Firstly it can take the Galaxy Map a while to path find a set of jumps to your desired system, sometimes up to 60 seconds or more as it tends to take some time to map out a route between systems as it fetches the data.

Secondly I believe the Galaxy Map will not help you route to a destination beyond 100 light years, (I might be wrong on what the galaxy maps limit is, please correct me if peeps know better)

Finally, your ships weight and outfitting will greatly affect your jumping capability, more powerful FSD and powerplant can result in even the starter sidewinder being able to jump 12 Light years, though its hell on fuel consumption, so make sure any route has a station to refuel at, or that you have a Fuel Scoop Equipped.

Thanks for the good info gents! I've found some decent local trading, but nothing like the massive piles of cash everyone here is talking about...

I can second that. I got interdicted by players three times tonight.

The first one interdicted me in Leesti System, I was just back from a long rare goods haul from the Fujin Cluster. The guy demanded 10 cargo, so I bolted. Thankfully, my Cobra can boost almost indefinitely. I quickly escaped to Supercruise, but got interdicted again. Same guy. Must have followed me into supercruise. Wasn't gonna give up easy. So I submitted. He roleplayed the whole "pirate thug" thing really good, so I was inclined to give him cargo. But 10 was too much. I gave him 5 and bolted. He took the bait. He was in a similarly equipped Cobra, but with Chaff Launchers, ECM and Shield Cells, so against my gimballed beams and seeker missiles he was well equipped. A fight seemed not worth it. Also, I kind of had to give him credit for roleplaying.

Next one was a Viper pilot that demanded me to stand down and relinquish one cargo. I ran... one pirate was enough for me.

Third and final one interdicted me and did not even message. I stood down, waiting for him to hail me and demand cargo. My hold was full of rares again. No message... he just kept flying around me, looking at my Cobra from all sides. That didn't look good... I looked at his loadout. Better than mine. This guy was equipped for combat, whereas I was equipped for self defense against NPCs and cargo hauling.... before I could hail him, he opened fire on me out of nowhere. My shields were down in an instant. I boosted away, diverted power, opened gunports, returned fire... but he was a superior pilot, probably with a proper flight stick, not a PS3 Controller like mine.... My canopy cracked open... my hull went down to 31%

I wasn't gonna let this griefer have the triumph of destroying me. Alt-Tab to Desktop, end task.

Respawned in solo play with cracked canopy and 25 minutes of air left. Reached nearest station, payed several thousand credits in rearming and repairs. But at least I could get my cargo on the market. Another 600k Profit. And the sweet irony to have griefed a griefer. :p

you can't make piles of cash to begin with, that's the thing about this game. You start in a small ship, which if you remove the shields and D scanner, can max at 10 cargo. even if you can find a trade to make 1k per item profit, you can only make 10k per trip.

I've just got to an Adder, which is 26 cargo as a pure trader. Later I might repurpose that as an explorer, or I might buy something more suited.
