Starting to trade

So, I'm going to bit the bullet and start trading....

I refuse to go trade in solo mode as it's just cheating to be honest.

So the plan is this....

I'm getting a type 6.....my buddy will fly escort in his viper....
We'll fly a rares loop....then I'll hop in my cobra and escort him in his type 6.

Questions...

What's the jump range on a type 6? We'll need both to have similar ranges but we still need the viper to be able to handle itself.

Armament for the type 6....I'm thinking pint defence,ECM and Chaff....plus a couple of heat seeking misssile pods. The viper can batter shields down and I can fire off missiles whilst flying backwards with flight assist off!!! YEEEHAW!

The route......any suggestions for new starters?

Finally, fuels scoops are a must right?

Range depends on the class of your FSD, but it aint bad. Pint defence? yes, you will need point defence turrets. All I used, and a good shield. No you dont necessarily need fule scoops, fuel on a Type 6 is quite cheap. As to where, my advice is pick a system and see what there is.

Thanks, How much higher than the galactic average do rare prices go?

Tying to work out how much we'd make....it'd be nice if I could offer payment to another fighter, not sure how much would make it worth their while though. I guess If i do one loop I'll know.

Do you play in open? From these boards running rares in open is quite risky....

I certainly know from the point of view of a cobra pilot if I see a player in a type 6 I interdict immediately.

It can get risky, but you can minimise that risk - pick a route away from the most populated systems, don't fly straight in the ecliptic plane, and you'll see the amount of interdictions fall rapidly.

I'm kind of looking forward to getting interdicted tbh.....I think I want to go right through the populated systems.

Has anyone had any success with limpet mines? When they're dropped on me they never seem to do anything.

I made cash by running rares from Lave/Diso/Leesti out to Alacarakmo which is 200Ly away on the edge of inhabited space. It's a pretty quiet run once you get away from Lave. I've never had an issue running rares and I only ever play in open. They make sense if you have a smallish ship you want to upgrade, you can travel pretty quickly and only scoop when you need to.

That statement is ridiculous... Trading in solo is not cheating... Is Solo a game mode? YES. Is it allowed by Frontier? YES. Are you authorized to play Solo? YES. Then this isn't cheating...

People trade in solo because there is still a big issue with pilots in empty ships being interdicted and shot down by griefers for absolutely no strategic or valuable reason.... Not to mention that PvP is flawed right now due to the "Hard logging" issue that we're having right now. Don't say that something like trading in solo is cheating when it clearly isn't. New players should understand that there is nothing wrong with playing in any game mode currently offered...

Playing in solo is fine but not if you ever plan on coming back into open play.

What that says is...when I'm starting out I want to play on my own without being hassled by other players, once I'm established I'll happily come back into open in my tooled up ship. It is cheating regardless of if it's allowed or not.

It's just an extended version of combat logging....I'll play in open only when the terms suit me. When they don't I'll logout. Long term combat logging if you like.

This attitude is detrimental to the game, it seems many people are too scared to "be the target" which is why all you around lave are cobras and vipers and the odd soul in a hauler brave enough to actually play the game.

Due to low spawn rates of rare goods i would just use a cobra each with 32t of cargo space, this will give you a fighting fit ship with a decent jump range. A Type 6 (112t cargo hold) will take far to long to fill up with rares and will just eat into your profit margin (especially if you get popped). One thing to get nailed is jumping into each others low energy wakes to assist in the event of interdiction as it will happen, a vipers jump range is awfull for this type of work so i would steer clear of them (and with cobras you both get payed each trip).

Also, flying those areas in a Type 6/7 ect is like have a kick me sticker on your back.

Good Luck Commanders, Happy hunting!

Oh, playing the game is detrimental to the game? Gotcha.

Not another Solo-vs-Open-Is-Cheating-Rant, disguised as "I'm just an honest trader!".

It's only cheating if the developers proclaim it as such. Which they do not, they fully support mode switching. If you don't like that, then that's entirely your own opinion, and you have the freedom to play differently yourself. But calling it "cheating" is quite a bit over the top.

Yes, I was wondering how long the rare run would need to be to fill up......I really like the idea of this though. Could fill the rest of my hold with standard cargo on the way.

Until 1.2 comes along so that traders can hire an escort, why would anyone risk their hard earned trading ship and cargo with people like you around? Not a dig at you particularly but the game is not currently designed with proper trading in mind, the traders are to vulnerable.

Once the 'Wings' update comes along I would imaging we will see a lot more traders going back and forth with escorts. This will add a lot to the game.

If you could explain how it's any different morally than combat logging I'd be happy to hear it.

The logic is exactly the same....I'm happy in open, oh no I got attacked, I'll quit and come back later then the game suits me. It is detrimental to the game.... the mix of player ships is hugely affected by this attitude, there are next to no players in freighters about.

If I can make some money in open with fighter escort and a rack of missiles then I'll be happy and I'll be happy for anyone to come and have a go.
Should change my name to CMDR KICK ME.

Wings will improve things I'm sure, but it is possible now, I regularly fly with another pilot and by and large we can interdict together and help each other out if we get interdicted....

The main problem is not having your wingman show up a different colour on the radar....and in fact there should also be a way to find your wingman when you're out of radar range......

AS an example i was using my cobra for about 2.5hrs for a round and a bit trip, it consisted of two selling areas and was far from optimised. After this run i would normally make 1.3m-1.5m creds, but use some online tools ( such as http://eliteraretrader.co.uk ) to plan your routes and keep an eye on the distance to station as some are extremely long and time consuming.

Lets stick to giving a new trader advice on trading as he has asked, there are plenty of other threads that you can wave your knickers around in to be noticed.

A lot of people (me included) do not have a human player that they can fly regularly with and even if are do both get time to go online together we have to mess around for ages to get into the same game instance.

It will all be much better when we are able to hire both PC and NPC escorts.
