I already got it.
It's interesting but you would probably need a few friends who knows what they are doing or you will do an awful lot micro management from the captain's chair.

It's a VR game from the get go, pancake mode has only been recently added and yes, you can play with AI crew instead of humans. I really haven't played it much but what I did was fun and much more so with a human crew who were all in the spirit of the show
There is no hiring of crew.
You have AI crew, or other players slot into the position.
And you can easily switch around between seats as well.
The AI crew need to be told do anything and everything.
So while I played it felt very trek, especially when the voice commands gel and your crew are managing shields and firing lasers at your command.
I would definitely recommend for 14$ and even though I payed more I would definitely recommend for anyone who remotely like star trek.
But I wouldn't think anyone here would find the concept of a spaceship and crew, blasting through space interesting
