Station Entrance HUD

So I've certainly not owned all the ships in the game yet. I've got most of those up to and including the T6.

However so far I've not really noticed much scale change. Let me be a little bit more specific because I'm really not sure of the terminology.

Basically aside from the handling, and the effective braking distance, I don't notice a lot of difference in the experience of attempting to land at a station.

I've no idea how large each of the ships is relative to each other, and have no real sense of how big they are relative to the entrance of the stations either.

I would like to suggest that a HUD (or whatever it's called) be added to the ship interface to diagram your ship relative to the entrance.

This would occupy the same space as the interface that changes from system readout to the targetting system when you are attempting to land on a pad.

I appreciate that this might be hard to understand... Again I'm really not sure of the terminology.

Short version... How about the UI that appears during landing, being adapted for the process of getting through the initial station letter box.

Please understand, I'm not having any difficulty performing the task of getting through the entrance. I just feel as if it's always the same no matter what ship I'm in and I Fel somethin glike this might help me to understand the gravitas of the situation.

I'd like there to be a difference between attempting to land (warning: mixed genre comparison ahead :D) a Puddle Jumper vs The Enterprise.

Thoughts?

There's the external view camera. There's also many threads about people using the external view camera while docking and then destroying their ship. Maybe you can find that on some video sharing site of your choice.

I would dearly love a HUD overhaul, but a mailslot holograph is low on my list of useful items. I can't see using it more than once if even that, although I get your point.

There was one in the early newsletter that showed the position of your ship inside the letter box. Pretty sure it was around the time in BETA that they gave a load of free credits so everyone bought Lakon 9's and wrecked them on the cowcatcher

Instead of the HUD I think the left the autorotation on a little longer as you went through and people now don't get caught so less need for the HUD

Perhaps it would be easier to implement and be more useful/unobtrusive, to use the cargo scoop display mechanics to show the station entrance in relation to your [scaled] ship graphic once you are within x distance and pointed at the entrance.

Back in the day, when the T9 had just been introduced, and it was a complete git to dock anything larger than the Cobra without scattering yourself into the void, Frontier proposed exactly this, and even released some concept art to show the proposed docking aid. Rather than it being implemented (yet?), we got the 'repulsive toast rack' that channelled you into the centre of the slot (which then got toned down after a number of, erm, 'unwanted' flight characteristics came to light), and we finally ended up with the huge nerf on collision damage whilst docking.

*Edit 2* Found it! Concept art was 'Peek of the Week' in Newsletter #25: http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=ae4c732e15

There was an image somewhere, showing a few ships and a dude standing on the ground. I'm sure I remember this from somewhere.

I imagine the 'conda is about probably about the size of a football pitch.

Found the HUD interface in newsletter 25 - what a saddo

As soon as you move to a T7, you'll notice a difference, you have to go through the slot low, real low.
That's the largest ship I've flown, and the only one I've ever scraped.
I'd like to see the HUD be better as well.
Also, it's mind boggling that there's no heading in the HUD, just point ship towards target, and go.

I just went from a T9 to a Conda. I NEVER hit the sides (top/bottom/left/right) of the slot with the T9/T7 or anything else. So easy to get in.

The Conda? 50% of the time, I'm hitting the slot. I think it's the top/bottom, but sometimes the sides. I just CANNOT figure out where the FPM (flight path marker, orange dot) should be for me not to hit something. I tried top half, center, a bit below center, but nothing works.

I also tried doing a dolphin move by nosing down as I go through, but still hit sometimes. I dunno. As long I don't tear the canopy or cargo scoop off going through, I'll just have to live with the scraping sound. :(

Not at all, though I know what you mean. You need to be aware where the cockpit is in the ship. No matter what ship you fly, you really want to go through the slot neither high nor low, but in the middle - obvious really. The problem is that the view that you get in the cockpit means that where you the pilot need to be in the slot looks lower for some ships than for others. I have not flown any of the big ships since the beta (when it was harder than it seems to be now), but back then it seemed that the Anaconda cockpit was high up (and well back) on the ship, so to get the ship in the middle, the cockpit needed to be high up the letter box. And the T9's cockpit was right at the bottom front, so the cockpit needed to be low in the letter box.

In the E3 trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISR4ebdGlOk there is a T9 with two people underneath it (0:24) and a few seconds later an Eagle with some people milling around the station. The T9 looks massive but even the Eagle looks big!
