So, the station interiors make me think that Fdev designers played X4 and decided to steal that entire look and feel.
How about instead, some of the stuff that looks like it should be interactable, is.
Idea #1:
The computer consoles that are in the station everywhere. Make these respond to player interaction. Showing some stats and stuff. But if you play around a bit more, you find an entertainment menu to play the full Elite 1984 game on the console. The controls will switch to ship flight controls while engaged with the game and the display fills your visor. People walking by will see you're playing elite as you stand there like a drone. Your progress and state in the game is persistent, so you can suspend it and come back where you left off whenever you want.
It's elite within elite. Boom.
idea #2:
Feral cats live in stations. You must gather materials as treats for the space cats to befriend one. Once a space cat is your friend, he/she follows you around wherever you go (except planet side). Kind of like your employeed co-pilots. You can't customize your space cat, so you must find one you like by chance and win them over with skillful use of treats. Space cats have their uses as well... if you're talking to a rather uncooperative npc, your space cat will rub against them and release their space parasites to mind control them into being nicer to you. Maybe you're being mind controlled ... wait, why are you doing what the space cat wants and what does it have to do with raxxla?
idea #3:
some stations should be falling apart / under construction / in disrepair etc based on the overall economy of the system or state of the system. The npcs should have idle chatter related to this. Some of the idle chatter should be about you due to your reputation as you walk near any.
Idea #4:
There should be galnet displays running current news stories all over the concourse. Getting near one and interacting with it will feed the display into your helmet for a more full-screen view and clearer audio. This would include feeds of local news. Many of the audio only clips would be the local news anchors talking to the camera with some text/headlines and other newsy graphics scrolling by as they talk. Their mouths syncing to the audio so it looks like they're talking ..etc.
