Station shot me, where's my compensation?

Hey all,

I only returned to the game in the past week or so, but I've noticed something... Firstly, and this is perhaps a location / system state influenced thing, there have been a LOT more fights going on around Stations, as well as around my own Fleet Carrier. Regularly I'm leaving or approaching a Station or my FC and a Fight breaks out. A number of times now, while under Advanced Docking Computer control, a fight has broken out and the Station or FC have started shooting too. However they are seemingly WOEFULLY inaccurate and I regularly - literally 50% of such encounters - end up taking a hit or two.

Now, fights breaking out around Stations and Fleet Carriers isn't a new thing, but it used to be less common and I'd never been hit before. Needless to say, I'm NOT the Station or FC's target here, just a law-abiding Commander using the facilities. As an aside, the weird thing an FC does when it fires likely doesn't help. I mean, it'll fire a burst seemingly at the target, then a second 45 degrees off, then a third 45 degrees off that in rapid succession. Always done it. Looks weird.

So, the topic title is (I hope) obviously more than a little tongue in cheek of course. However, wouldn't it be NICE to get a "Sorry" message and a few credits thrown at you "for your inconvenience" and to cover repairs. It's a pittance to me these days, but I've spent a few hundred thousand credits on hull and module repairs just from taking Station / FC Fire. The damage dealt is just a few percent for the Cutter and no Panther II I'm flying. However, someone in a smaller, perhaps unengineered ship could be toasted by such fire.

It's not so much about the money, except perhaps for the newer player, but more about adding to the feeling of immersion. I play other games where accidental fire is a thing, and it's nice when an NPC Ship or Station does a "my bad, soz" comms.

As a slight aside, I've actually taken more damage from Stations and my own FC, than I have from actual enemies. Despite frequent interdictions. I'm currently just hauling.

As always, with things like this, I do try to think of the impact this can have on a newer player. Early-game "well, that was " moments are less likely to encourage long-term play.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the NPC powerplay ships that're responsible.

I assume they're doing a facsimile of the sort of stuff we're supposed to do, which means they buzz around hostile stations pretending to do sketchy things, which causes the stations to light them up when they get detected.

However they are seemingly WOEFULLY inaccurate
Or :

The station guns are targeting (useless) mines which those dumb (literally dumb) Powerplay NPCs litter all over the place when attacked by a Powerplay security ship, and sometimes your ship happens to be right in the way of a mine which the station weapons are shooting at. That's what my observations have yielded. (This also explains why the laser turrets do this weird shooty behavior because a mine is destroyed in one hit, but those turrets fire a three shot burst)

Just roll your eyes, blame human stupidity and move along.

I actually agree, the fact that my carrier is shooting at things within 2 mins of logging on is getting old now. I hope this is recognised as something that needs to be looked at. It also always looks like the laser crews are on crack or something, but I guess that could be the mine thing that someone said.

Ah that would explain it. A couple times as I'm leaving station I've had my point defense start shooting at seemingly nothing. Must be mines floating around?

I have to agree with you on that point.
I also have to chuckle that you've forgotten how the forum's particular style* of censorship renders sweary sentences very confusing to your readers ;)

That or security ships shooting around missiles, though I’m not entirely sure if point defense targets them again when the shooter isn’t hostile. Been a while since I used any.

But your carrier is always logged in and active so it might well have been shooting at stuff all the time.

I was away since 2018 and yeah it's def a surprise getting shot up on every other carrier landing, and occasionally at starports. Once while undocking from a starport I got lased through the mail slot by a battle outside, but ofc I can't just re-land for repairs because Timer Of Death will eat me. I get hit by the turrets in the mail slot a lot too.

It's def the powerplay stuff, the ships are clean but aligned with another character so they gank 'em.

I popped in a couple days ago and on the command deck of my carrier I could see a light show, things were happening. I used the carrier admin page to see the show. Yeah, lots of salt out there.

If only, the fact that all is quiet until ships start arriving because I logged in is very immersion breaking and a constant reminder that this is not reality. More like groundhog day.

No offense Scoob, but you return to the game more frequently than I play it, and by my reckoning I've never left or returned ;)

I do indeed. I play for a bit, then stop for potentially months at a time. I might dip in from time-to-time in between, but that's usually just to check things after an update. I've not played regularly since the last Titan fell, though I may have a dozen hours or so between then and this past week or so.

I do like to share that I've been out for a bit, as often things that are obvious to those playing consistently, are a mystery to me. However, I do still pop on to the forums occasionally when not actively playing. Just to see if anything interesting is going on. I do still like money, despite being rich. The unit of measurement isn't "credits" any more, it's "months of Carrier upkeep" lol. I also like the various special modules that get offered.

FCs don’t have PDCs. If they did, main gun batteries would catch a rest.

A lot of the fire of stations and FCs seems directed at mines and missiles.

It does get boring when these massive behemoth stations only field one single weapon type that has to cover every single attack type.
