stations moving at lightspeed

so I have come across this before but now I decided to bite.
for instance hidden willow hacienda in the Atlantis system, the station moves so fast it either rams your ship into oblivion or flies off so fast you only see it for a second or so.
is this intended?~! what is the point of these? is it like the station's equivalent of Mitterands hollow, is there something 'special' or another bug????

I haven't heard of any stations doing it, but there has been a bug with Combat Zones and Resource Extraction Sites zooming away once you drop into them.

I'd submit a bug report.

I just checked Inara for the Atlantis system and that station is listed. Are your sure of the name as the four stations listed are:
Ayers City
Bliss Vision
Kimura Terminal
Comer Arsenal.

Yep - seen this before. It's a bug. FD may know about it but it would be wise to make a report.

I have a theory. You may have noticed that as you approach a station it may be moving off in one direction or another - usually slowly. And then when you get to within a certain distance it suddenly stops moving away and you find yourself flying directly at it and soon after that you get the indication that you can now drop out of supercruise. This is because you are always flying relative to something. This is necessary for the flight mechanics. In deep space your ship will be performing flight calculations relative to the nearest large mass. But as you approach the station at a certain point it becomes necessary for the ship to switch relative masses and there are certain observable consequences to this.

If this switch takes place properly then no problem and all you see is a slight change of movement of the station since you are now flying relative to it and therefore directly at it. But if something is wrong in the stored constants and variables of the station such as position, speed, and so on, then the calculations necessary to position you nicely when you drop out won't work and bizarre consequences result. In essence your ship is not calculating your speed relative to the station correctly since it is working with incorrect data.

FD need to know about this so they can check the parameters that relate to that particular installation and fix it. I'm sure it isn't a big deal - they just need to have it brought to their attention.

Can't remember where but I ran into this issue a while back and just thought it was some sort of odd secret I didn't know about. Guess its a bug then?

There's exactly one installation near me that does this - the rest are stable.

As far as I can tell, the problem with that particular installation is this:
- the installation orbits a ringed planet
- the installation counts as being in the frame of reference of the rings
- the spot in space where you drop out doesn't count you as being in the frame of reference of the rings

So when you drop out at the installation's location, the ring rotation drags it rapidly away from you.

So ... question: has anyone seen this "running away" happen at an installation around a non-ringed planet?

I've had this with every POI I've visited for months.

It started happening when I arrived in Colonia (which was, coincidentally, probably around the time of one of the 3.3.x updates) and I just assumed it was something to do with my location in the galaxy.

Curious. The only Colonia Region POI I've had this happen with is "The New Queen VI" civilian installation in Kinesi (which had this problem in 3.2 as well). All of the others work fine for me.

When I encountered it, it was for a station orbiting around the local star (some private noble's estate if I recall correctly).

I encountered this today. I had a turret destroy mission but the ship would just move away too fast every time I dropped out of supercruise.

I've encountered this before but never on a mission target. This was in Alpha Centauri...some Freedom blah blah ship.

It made me quit the game feeling I wasted my time. I was already annoyed after calculating how many jumps I would need to get Palin's 5K ly .

Yeah had this to, cant remember what system or facility it was, but I dropped in, saw the facility, then watched in amazement as it shot off into the distance. I cant remember what ship I was in, but I seem to remember it hitting 500+ on boost.... and I didnt even come close to keeping up with it.

Made me chuckle actually, but its defo a bug of some kind, there is no way a floating supermarket should hit that speed :)
