Stay awhile and listen...

A sad story with a bittersweet ending.

I just had enough Cr to upgrade from a Python to the big A. Forum wisdom says to keep your current ship and earn enough dough to upgrade to the next ship AND kit it.

Wisdom be damned. Got me the big A nonetheless. Not enough money to upgrade and barely enough to pay insurance.

Thought I could work out the money to upgrade the ship thanks to good ol' trading.

Tried looking for a short trade route and found one between the founder world and Bunda.

Opened the navigation map and oh wow. After computing, I had to jump 6 times to cover a measly 10Ly.

I harnessed my courage and soldiered on. I never thought I would sweat so much being interdicted by a ridiculous eagle but managed to dock at the station in Bunda.

Sold the cargo and used the profit to buy cargo holds and load the anaconda to the brim with coffee for the trip back.

Opened the navigation map and oh smeggin' hell. After computing, I had to cross halfway round the galaxy (ok more than 20 times...) to cover a measly 10Ly.

Pondering on my situation (and again sweat pearling on my forehead) I decided it was not worth the hassle.

In the end I sold my big A bits by bits. Bought a sidewinder and shamefully jumped back to the founder world to buy back a Python for the time being.
(click only if you wish to read the most pathetic story...)

Next time, I am going to save enough for the big A and the best FSD. Fortunately I did not lose too much, it could have been far far worse.

Morality : :D when people on the forum says "save for the ship and her upgrade (and insurance goddamit)" you f%*$£$$ listen ! (and never make money decision around 1 AM).

At least you survived to sell it.

I'd have been tempted to gut it and buy a Viper to RES grind the 30mil odd you need to put a trading loadout on. Or if I could afford it an Exploring ASP to go away for a few weeks and come back with data for outfitting :p

Yeah, a ship with a (laden) jump distance under 10ly (I'd even say 12ly) is really useless if you want to get from A to B.

I had that story yesterday with my brother. He's very unexpierenced. Has a stock T6 (only cargo racks upgraded, so max jump range laden was ~8.5ly) full with some stuff and I wanted to show him how to bounty hunt. A good system was only 50ly from his position, so I told him to just jump there.

Well this ended in a longer discussion from
'I can't plot a route there' (=impossible with that jump range), over
'Sell that stuff you have in your cargo hold, so you can make longer jumps',
'But I don't want to make a loss',
'Man, sell it or you won't get anywhere (no upgrades available). How much of a loss do you have selling it?'
'Hm, well, none actually, but I don't earn much by selling it here.'
'SELL IT ALREADY, GOD '$%§!!!$%?!!!'

Long story short he finally made the 50ly after 1h with his T6 ant the unladen 12.39ly jump range... what a pain! :D

Thing is, for a trade anaconda, you must not upgrade it, but downgrade it:
the default one, according to edshipyard: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=606,mpY5QG5QG,2-DIBkAA8cDIDI8I,0AA08c7UwmpT072mpW2Uc02M
- lower the power plant from 8E: 5D saves money and weight
- lower the thruster: 7E -> 6D weight, energy and a little money
- lower the shield: 6E -> 4D (very low but enough. Dont boost into station though)
- lower the power distrib: 8E -> 7D (but switch back to 8D asap)
this should save you enough credit for a 6d fsd
A final non optimal configuration for beginning is http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=606,m...0A08cBaDI8I,0Bk0AA0AA0AA08c08c08c7Re07207203w and is just over 10ly for less than one more million from the default price. And of course you can not fit the 128t cargo and still load more than a python for the beginning...
Next update will be to change that ugly 8E sensor to 8D one, and the life suppost to a D one too!

When I got my Anaconda I went to Founders World with assets over 200Mcr. I have enough for the big A, and some decent kit, with enough left over for cargo and buy back. I have learned long ago to make sure I hade enough for a decent fitted out ship.

To not stay forever in a Sidewinder, is ultimately a story with a happy ending. Unless your're happy in one. In that case it will be hard to scare the children with tales of horror!

99.9% of things that go wrong in this game you can pretty much break it down to impatience. Every risk and mistake you make is because you couldnt wait.

Truer words were never spoken. Saved up 17Mil to buy a 5Mil Vulture.

I did something similar with a T9. After upgrading cargo space jump range was as far as the end of my garden and back. .... Long Long slog.
I give this post 7 out of 10 Flimley points :)
