stealing starships

Imagine it, you've just docked on one of achenar's many orbital stations and left the cockpit to go carousing in one of the many neon lit bars to erm....chat up girls and booze...

...and someone boards your ship and hotwires the ignition and speeds off with your ship while your otherwise 'engaged'...

Will this ever be possible? Hilarious (until it happens to me lol)

David Braben mentions this specifically in one of the KS Dev diaries (in conjunction with the walking around expansion), if it's technically possible - expect it in game :)

I think stealing a ship in some (rare) conditions is a very good idea ! For example, if you sign up in the Navy you can gain some medals, and taking some responsabilities... and a better fighting ship ! Once you're captain of a powerful cruiser, you can desert, and then become a feared pirate, with a military ship !

In the first original Elite, if your status is "fugitive", you can become "clean" again by travelling to another galaxy (that cost 5000 credits). If you steal a ship, the computer of the ship will know it, and tell everybody that you're a fugitive. So, i suggest you can go to "pirate station", and change illegaly the computer of your ship.
Same kind of stuff you can find in the GTA series, when you spray a stolen car in another color, and escape from police pursuit... what do you think ?

Travelling to another galaxy is abit of a stretch since DB is only simulating the milky way. Perhaps just going off the grid and visiting some pirate or anarchy system is enough. Then pay a premium to get your serial numbers redone or what have you. Also pay for another engine signature or something that will wipe your slate clean.

In regards to ship stealing, I would say it would be a rare event to steal a ship from a player. Its more likely you would run into countless NPC ships before you had a chance to. And lets face it stealing a big ship would be next to impossible, unless you had your Oceans 11 crew of cut throats that do this sort of job routinely. I would make it impossible to steal big ships unless you can crew them or have enough droids to setup shop.

Otherwise ship stealing might be limited to single fighters or ships that require no more than 1-2 to pilot. My 2c.

And as jedt pointed out, you are then left with a player without a ship. And if he doesn't have any insurance and can't replace it what then? Does the state take pity on you and give you an interplanetary shuttle so you can move dirt from one location to another to earn enough to get back on your feet?

It does beg the question though: What happens if I start the game, fly out and deliberately smash my ship into an asteroid over and over again until I run out of money. It is unlikely there there will ever be a "GAME OVER" screen for us so how to FD plan to deal with whatever the bottom of the rung is as far as you financial situation is concerned?

The latter is covered under the death penalty rules. I imagine a variant of that could be applied to the former, to help a pilot get back on his feet.

I forgot about that. But I didn't notice anything in there about running out of money, only that you are likely to just get further and further into debt with your creditors! :)
Nah .. lost your starship, no money ... to the salt mines with you (and basically your character is murdered / killed off)
And let that be a lesson to you, kids! "Neither a borrower nor a lender be!" :)

Imagine if that position turned you into a slave and you had to spend the next few weeks working in a factory making drive plates! Or perhaps a mini-game where you are picked up in your 1 ton container and you and the other slaves have to fight for control of the ship that just picked you up!?

About halfway down the Creditors section:

There is a debt cap, beyond which debt is written off

So that would be considered to be rock bottom. It follows that continually failing to pay back (or at least be seen to be trying to) would result in negative reputation hits. Eventually you'd reach a point where so many people wanted you dead that playing the Commander would be a nightmare, you'd be better off restarting. Some players might regard recovering from that position as a gameplay challenge, so I think it's rather good that ED doesn't appear to make the decision for you, rather lets the player come to their own conclusions.

Remember this suggestion Memnoch for when the walking about module is planned .. there are going to be threads about suggestions as what to do and this could be perfect. The ship should be an NPC one but it's a fun little way of getting back on your feet :)
