Steam Controller for Elite:Dangerous Review

First of all, this is just a post reviewing the steam controller, not if the steam controller is better than any other input method, I like controllers, if you don't, that's cool, Joysticks are great as well, to each their own. Also, if you're not familiar with using a controller for E D, this post may be confusing.

So I just received my Steam controller, and after a couple of hours fumbling around I have come to the conclusion that it is a piece of...Incredible Hardware! and yes, for Elite: Dangerous as well, it functions AMAZINGLY!

My first impressions, I must say, were awkward and confusing, the default setup for the controller is clunky and uncomfortable, and doesn't make use of the controller as it should. For anyone unfamiliar with the controller, here's a pic.

In the default setup the D-pad is used as, well, a D-pad, and the left joystick as the left joystick,(Notice on the steam controller these are swapped from the standard x-box setup, that's what makes it uncomfortable for me). The right touchpad acts as the right Joystick, but is also swapped from the x-box controller with the usual ABXY button placement, a little strange to get used to, but I like it better already. This setup does work using the advanced controller setting, and maybe isn't even all that bad a of setup if you get use to it, but my real revelation and love for this controller came when I realized that I could use the big D-pad as the left joystick (because it's actually another touchpad!) and the left joystick as the D-pad.

All of the sudden this worked so much better and actually feels really cool, and kind of futuristic. I now steer my ship with two touchpads, left for roll and pitch, right for yaw and vertical, click left touchpad for boost. The left joystick as the power distributor works like a charm, no click necessary, just push in the desired direction.

All the button combos in the advanced controller setup, for example, "B+D-pad down" to activate FSD also work using the left joystick as the D-pad, so that "B+Joystick Down" will activate FSD, "X+Joystick Down" for landing gear etc.

It was incredibly easy to do, and works instantly with the “advanced controller” preset in E D. My binding is called “Badben's Elite: Dangerous Binding” if you want to try it out.
All in all, I think this is my favorite controller ever, and it's all because of the amazing customizability built in. It was so easy to make the controller work the way I wanted it to. If you are a controller fan, I definitely recommend this controller for Elite: Dangerous.

Not convinced myself .. I can see it working with an RTS maybe, but otherwise this appears to be trying to solve a problem that doesn't actually exist. (Just like SteamOS)

I have serious trouble getting used to it, I don't know if its the problem with the bindings or a problem of getting used to it.

Also, I hate that the controller's gyro, while is very precise, and have 3 axis which would be great to control the ship, in the steam interface it seems to only let you bind two axis, which cuts a lot of potential.

+1
Thank you for the review interesting insight, not sure if I could switch from Keyboard and Mouse to Steam Controller. But was one of options I was considering, the other is full VR setup with VR controllers.

How does the touchpad compare to a mouse or joystick for aiming accuracy for fixxed weapons?

Sorry it took so long to reply. The touchpads are incredibly accurate, but touchy. It definitely takes some practice, especially with fixed weapons, but it's as precise as an xbox controller, which is what I was using before. The thing that takes getting use to is that if you touch the touchpad on the outer rim, it instantly jumps to full output, whereas you need to actually move a joystick from the center to the outer rim which raises output more gradually. It will make your ship much more jumpy to begin with so you need to learn to keep your thumbs more towards the center of the pads and slide it out as if you're using a joystick.

Another thing that can be annoying until you figure it out is that even very minor touches will register on the the pads, so sometimes the palm of my hand would graze the edge of one of the pads accidentally and and start spinning the ship without me realizing what was happening. Not really a big issue, you just need to be a little aware.

Very interesting post sir ! (virtual rep) You just'up my hype about the Steam Controller.
In fact i used 360 pad (with fix weapons) but i want to change i mean ... Try somthing else, something new but not a Flight joystick (i don't why but i'm not a big fan of it ...)
And your post answers some question i have as well !

I just received my Steam Controller this morning but I can't get ED to do anything with it at all. Can you give me a few hints on how to get it working?

Could it be because I don't have the Steam release of ED but a Pre-order from the ED website?

It's a problem for Valve when the gaming platform has its nuts in a vice owned by Microsoft! It's a problem for people who prefer to use an alternative OS. It's a problem for people who don't want to get tied into Win10/Xbox in the living room.

In short, it's a problem for many people. Just because it's not a problem for you doesn't mean that it's not a problem!

I still think using a Joypad with 2 analog sticks is far better then a Joypad with 2 touch pads.
The touchpad is nice for mouse support thought.

Anyway i would choose a Xbox 360 Controller over a Steam one every time.
would be interesting how it compares about the Mirosoft XBox one Elite controller.

Why would you use a controller for what is in effect a flight sim? Is that not like using a joystick to type a memo?

I love the joystick

My son, 12 finds it impossible control, but loves the Xbox controller.
Probably the biggest difference is you have to move your whole hand to operate the joystick, but only your thumb for the Xbox. Gross vrs fine motor skills.

You can add an external game to steam, launch it from there and use the controller.

Or get a key from Frontier.

I added the game as a non steam game but that doesn't help any at all - I'm guessing because you have to link to the launcher and the game itself is a different exe.

But thank you for the tip of getting a key from Frontier!.. I will try that and see if I can get my ED changed to an official steam one.

Where is the "Advanced Controller" preset in ED? I don't find anything like it in the options menus.

** Edit **

Found it :

If you have the non steam version of the game do the following:

Log into your Frontier store account.
Go to your Account Dashboard
Click on Partner Keys - You will see an invitation to log in with steam
Log in with steam and a steam key will be available to you
Register the key with steam and download the steam ED Client

Now the Steam controller will work with ED

( you can remove your old installation of ED )
